Children in Nepal

Tekijä Elton Smith

The people of Nepal are being slowly poisoned by their drinking water. Arsenic in this region is a natural poison described by the World Health Organization as the worst natural disaster in human history. Potentially over 450 million people in the Indo-Gangetic plain from the Indus river valley to Bangladesh are drinking arsenic contaminated water. The major source of arsenic in this region originates from arsenic sediments from the Himalayas, and igneous rocks in Bangladesh. Filters for Families (http://filtersforfamilies.org) is working with local villages in Nepal to remove arsenic and other water contaminates. The photograph of the children was taken by the director of Filters for Families, Linda Smith. The aerial view of Mount Everest (the page footer) was taken by Kerem Barut.
