Sloan Struble — the creative mind and voice behind Dayglow — has made it clear that his aim in making music is to create a joyful experience.

In songs like “Can I Call You Tonight,” “Close To You,” and honestly, the rest of his as-of-now two-album discography, that ethos drips from every chord. Unsurprisingly, that agenda persists through the most recent single to tease the upcoming album, “Then It All Goes Away.”

Oh, come on now, it’s not always the same
You can’t tell me you don’t notice probably the same things
‘Cause I know the things
that you’ve been talking about, and

Sometimes I can’t ever believe what you say, yeah
It’s only in the way I’m feeling this down
That nothing seems to change (one, two, yeah)
You tell me everything, you tell me it’s fine, but
There’s something tells me that
there’s something going on here

I know the way you got that look in your eyes
And then it disappears

Starting off in a more grounded, bass-friendly corner, the heart of this song serves as a sort of yang to offset the yin of its follow-up, “Deep End.” But even with its subtle, grounded opener, “Then It All Goes Away” manages to sink its teeth into the bouncy, uplifted ennui that Dayglow has long since mastered balancing.

Not to continue bringing up greatest hits, but I’d theorize that one of the reasons why “Can I Call You Tonight” became such a smash sensation is because of its ability to mine elements of bedroom indie pop while maintaining an organic sense of instrumentation. It feels uniquely human in that way, and it’s a quality that Dayglow has made sure to hold onto. That balance is clear across Dayglow’s work, and is resoundingly present in “Then It All Goes Away.”

The lyrics are relatively simple with this one, and that works in the track’s favor, “I know the things that you’ve been talking about/ Sometimes I can’t even believe what you say/ It’s only in the way I’m feeling this down/ That nothing seems to change,” repeats itself a couple of times throughout. The words are sweet, catchy, and serve to let the entire song shine as a whole.

“Then It All Goes Away” is one of those songs that adds up to become more than the sum of its parts.

The simple lyrical choices, the sweet melody, and fun beat are all it takes to serve up the perfect cocktail of sonic experience. It’s tough to even describe one monolithic mood that this song embodies. No, it isn’t a song purely for dancing, nor is it a song to cry to. And simply relegating it to a “driving with the windows down” song feels like a copout. There’s a mythical sense to it that allows it to chameleon through emotional range while remaining incredibly distinct and recognizable. This is the trick always up Dayglow’s sleeve.

I know the things that you’ve been talking about, and
Sometimes I can’t ever believe what you say, yeah
It’s only in the way I’m feeling this down
That nothing seems to change (one, two, yeah)
You tell me everything, you tell me it’s fine, but
There’s something tells me that there’s something going on here
I know the way you got that look in your eyes
And then it disappears
And then it all goes away

With the song tipping us off to the new album right around the corner, we can likely expect so much more like this one. Even with its technical strength, it has an unexplainable, elusive recipe that lights up the spark of all the right feelings.

I, for one, will be waiting for People in Motion with bated breath — with “Then It All Goes Away” on repeat until I can hit play.
