Karelian Voice

Karjalaine iäni (The Karelian Voice), that explores the realities of being a young Karelian person in Finland today. The Karelians are a cultural and, in some cases, linguistic minority traditionally residing in eastern Finland and western Russia. Karelians and speakers of the Karelian language have in Finland for as long as Finns, but their culture and language have received no legal recognition. Both the culture and the language are endangered, and the Karelian community, including young people, are continuously working to revitalize the Karelian language and raise awareness of the Karelian culture.

Director Statement

To be Karelian is to maintain and to recreate a severely endangered language and a cultural identity. For young people in Finland, the basis of being Karelian is self-identification, which does not remove the possibility of being Finnish or something else, as well, in this multicultural world. It does not require a country, nor does it require a citizenship based on geography.

The aim is to show the strong commitment young people have made to revitalizing their culture. The revitalization creates a new community that strengthens its roots and bravely looks forward.

Tarkoitus on tuoda esille vahva sitoutuminen kulttuurinelvytykseen
nuorten parissa.
