Leila Kovrijjka 1 I’ve been living near the forest since I was a child. By near I mean 50 meters or so. 2 I can see it clearly from my window. 3 But it’s always been a forbiden territory for me. I was afraid of ticks spreading mortal diseases.
1 The only time I went there was at winter. But still it didn’t feel safe. / There was a rumor 2 about a man who killed a woman and hid parts of her body in the forest. I know for sure, that man was put into prison long ago but the forest remained terrifying for a fearful child like me. 3 I went back home after a couple of years living in another city and saw the forest again. Or at least what remained of it after some loggings.
1 They were cutting down my forest. 2 Herds of moose were running through the city.
1 Losing their home for the sake of a new church that was built in the middle. 2 The forest became less beautiful but remained terrifying. 3 I wonder where did the moose go?
Mikko Jylhä: Pinta / Surface Line 1 I could tell you a tale of this forest. 2 That vessel is one of the older times. 3 Times when this forest was on top the land. 4 On top? 5 So it is told. 6 The land was on above the water and treeroots went through the land to the water. 7 And the water rose and that vessel was the only escape. 8 All that fear and despair nested in the water.
1 Then the vessel was stuck on the forest and the fear had drawn a line. 2 On the other side is danger, only the forest goes through. 3 The vessel people broke the surface, and were lost forever. 4 I could tell you that tale someday.

1 Dance of death for a doe roe deer. 2 In climate of terror, the forest becomes an immense graveyard. A deer would hardly lock up an other species! This trait of theirs is rather elegant.
1 The truly bad men in this world make traps to cath birds. I feel guilty about this! It doesn’t matter anymore, does it?
1 Message of hope: As soon as tanks start destroying forests, the wildlife erects others.

Kuten kenen tahansa Poleskon asukkaan, niin minunkin elämänrytmini muodostui päivittäisistä rutiineista. Kun satoi, koko kylä pysähtyi piittaamatta luvatuista aukioloista - konseptista, jonka saimme suuresta maailmasta.
Kunnes yhtenä päivänä, jostain käsittämättömästä syystä, minun harmoniaani häirittiin.
Aurinkoisena lauantaina pystyi menemään kävelylle metsään ja ottamaan muutaman oluen mukaan, poimimaan sieniä ja etsimään rauhaa männyn varjosta.
Häirittiin? Se käännettiin täysin ylösalaisin!
Niin kuin aina heräsin vähän ennen keskipäivää ja melkein heti lähdin metsään.
Ostin korin sieniä
tien varrelta vanhukselta ja painauduin pusikkoon
Otin yhden sienen kerrallaan korista ja aloin istuttamaan niitä yksi kerrallaan paikkoihin
joihin vaistoni (tai jonkinlainen paholainen?) kertoi niiden saattavan kuuluvan.
Zuzanna Loch Like every true citizen of Polesko by the Ornia river, the harmony of my life was based on a composition of everyday constants. When it rained, the entire village would shut down, despite the promise of opening hours - a concept that came to us from the Big world. / On sunny Saturdays, you would go for a walk in the forest and take some beers along with you, pick some mushrooms, and seek relief in the shade of pine trees. / Until one day, for some mysterious reason, that harmony of mine was disturbed. / Disturbed? It was turned completely upside down! / I woke up as per usual, a bit before noon and shortly after, I headed towards the forest. / I bought a basket of mushrooms / from a baba standing by the road, and I immersed myself in the thicket. / I took mushrooms out of the basket, one after another, and started putting them back on the spots where my instinct (or a demon of sorts?) would advise me they might have belonged.

Kun olin valmis, istuin männyn varjossa ja huokaisin.
Lopulta lintujen laulu ja puiden suhina alkoivat ärsyttämään minua, joten lähdin kotiin tölkit mukana
välittämättä käytöksestäni.
Seuraavana päivänä tapahtui jotain epätavallista. Voisi luulla, että se oli edellisen illan päähänpistokseni seuraus.
Ja minä pysyin sillä tiellä. Joka toinen päivä tulen takaisin kotiin kohtalainen tinasato mukanani.
Totuus on etten ole koskaan pitänyt sienistä.
When that was done, I sat in the shade of a pine tree and sighed. / Hours of relaxation passed and every now and then I would reach for one of the empty beer cans lying around. / The birds’ chirping and the trees’ rustling would eventually annoy me, so I headed home with a bunch of cans, / completely unbaffled by my behaviour. / The next day, an extraordinary event happened. You might think it was a consequence of my last afternoon’s whimsey. / And that’s the way it stayed. Every other day, I come back home with a decent amount of tin harvest. The truth is I never liked mushrooms.

Antti Kurvinen At times when the forest cover lures over the backwoods, one can see how everything dies from it’s touch. One can see how the water in the river cools down and how it absorbs all light around - even the wind can not escape. All this in a blink of an eye. Suddenly, the pure and innocent forest transforms into more robust and thriving with unseen beauty. This is the beginning of a new life.
If one makes the most silent wish upon witnessing this mysterious fog passing by, it is most certain that the wish shall be granted. But if one gets caught, the forest will cover them with its fog to make sure of the traveler’s pure intentions. Yet, one is still free to wish, but beware – no one who dared to wish without utmost silence or pure intentions has ever been seen again.

Glynnis Fawkes 1 In April 2018, I and my children visited my parents for a week. In the morning I went running in the woods. / Up Holman Lane.. 2 ...and down the Wild Chery Trail to The Wildwood. / Here the city and family obligations seem far away, 3 and I feel closer to my childhood self, 4 and the feeling that it was possible that I could come across a mythical creature, a portal to another world, or a lost civilization.
1 Although the trails are well-travelled there are some places in these woods that seem as wild if people have never arrived, and full of potential of otherworldly magic. / But then, as if to correct any illusion, around a turn of the Dogwood trail you suddenly hear the roar of the city and cathc a glimpse of the river, bridges and railroad. 2 The city has changed and grown since I moved away 20 years ago‌ / as well as circmstances of my life. But the woods continue almost as if before time. 3 Once when I was 25 or so, I was running on the Wildwood, pretending to be one of the immortals- Artemis maybe / swift footed huntress, daughet of Zeus. 4 When, suddenly a deer jumped across the path.
1 Certainly an epiphany! But of what spirit? / Of Artemis herself? A spirit of the free wilderness of the woods 2 But the I saw that the deer was jumping to her faun / The deer was a mother, no avatar of a virgin goddess, even a goddess who pesides over childbirth. 3 About ten years later, the deer lead me to find my own baby under a skunk cabbage. / Et voila.
1 Just kidding! I had to do it the hard way. 2 And i never saw another deer in the woods again, avatar or not. 3 Now everytime I run past this place on the trail where the deer jumped I think of the goddess. 4 Immortal, unchanging; 5 and by then I’m running in the direction of home, where my family, always changing, is waiting. / Hey Mama, make me an egg!
