HONDA BRIO 2022 TEST: Compact size, big personality

    The 2022 Honda Brio RS.

The 2022 Honda Brio was a recurring but excellent experience

TIMING was key—as I was testing the 2022 Honda Brio, Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI) was readying to launch the 2023 version. Exactly a week after the review was completed, the update Brio which made its debut earlier in May in Indonesia arrived here.

I rode shot gun with Gregory E. Bautista on the blacktop Brio three days straight and we had excellent photos until a mistake zapped away all the images from the SD card. That incident was sad because it was a result of carelessness.

What the 2023 is going to be

Most of the changes on the 2023 Brio are cosmetics and fitments. But that is big because the upgrade on the looks make it feel line a new car. The 2023 Brio, to which I will probably line up for towards the end of the year, will probably not be any different from this experience, but will provide a visual enticement that makes it exciting and something to look forward to.

The engine and underpinnings remain to be that of the trusty 1.2L i-VTEC gasoline engine generating a commendable 89 horsepower and 110 Nm of torque. This zippy engine is paired with a smooth and efficient CVT transmission, ensuring a comfortable and responsive driving experience.

The updates clean up the looks—like a new jacket and shoes. These enhancements encompass a redesigned front fascia, lending it a more aggressive and captivating appearance, along with a revised rear end and a fresh interior featuring a modern design. Moreover, Honda has equipped the Brio with a host of new features, including a user-friendly 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a convenient rearview camera, and power windows and mirrors for added convenience.

While various international markets may offer multiple versions of the Brio, in the Philippines, it is available in two primary models: the standard edition and the sportier RS variant. I drove the RS extensively, finding every excuse to use it.

What the Honda Brio is now

The Honda Brio RS is a compact car with a big personality. It might not be the largest car on the block, but it more than makes up for it with its charming looks and nimble performance. It’s designed for those who appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the thrill of the open road.

Whether you’re navigating tight city corners or squeezing into parking spots that seem impossible to fit in, this car’s compact size makes every urban adventure a breeze.

It is really practical and budget-conscious. Nothing in the car is overengineered, simple ports and interfaces as well as materials make it easy to clean. The ability to squeeze 19 kilometers per liter (21 was the best I got in open traffic at 11:00 pm.) With the rising fuel costs, the Brio’s fuel efficiency is a godsend. Kind of like asking for an allowance, then saving you money while still delivering a fun and memorable driving experience.

Despite its compact size, the Honda Brio RS surprises with its spacious and comfortable interior. It’s like your cousin who always carries a backpack full of goodies—there’s more room inside than you’d expect.

Equipped with modern infotainment features and connectivity options, it ensures that you stay entertained and connected, whether you’re stuck in traffic or embarking on a road trip adventure.
