MUSTARINDA Garden

Mustarindan pelto on toiminut kasvimaana vuosikymmeniä sitten ja sinne on ajettu talvisin mutaa tontin kulmalta. Multakerroksen paksuus on pääosin hyvä. Hiekkaisimpiin penkkeihin istutimme maanparannuskasveja. Lisää multaa penkkeihin saimme myös käytäviltä. Kompostia lisättiin ravinnepitoisesta maasta pitäville kasveille kaivamisvaiheessa, ja välillä sen unohduttua myös kylvövakoon. Kaivaessa löytyi hiilistä ja lasinsiruista päätellen nuotiopaikka sekä vanha mansikkamaa ja kasvihuoneen pohja. Hiilet eivät maadu, joten koitimme saada ne kerättyä pois maasta ja levitimme tuhkan tasaisemmin penkkeihin pH:n tasapainottamiseksi.

The field next to Mustarinda has been a vegetable garden some decades ago, and more dirt has been brought there from another parts of the yard. The layer of soil in the field is quite good. In more sandy parts we planted green manure plants. We added compost to the beds when digging – and if forgot, we added some when we made the rows for the seeds. We also used the black dirt layer from the paths in the garden beds. We tried to take away the coal that we found from old fireplaces, and spread the rest of the ash to the beds for balancing the pH.

Puolukat ja mustikat eivät ole loppukesällä kaukana, mutta päätimme istuttaa muutaman viinimarjapensaan. Sumuisena päivänä haimme Svenjan kanssa hylätyn talon raunioilta muutaman villiintyneen (luultavasti punaviini-)marjapensaan taimen.

There’s a lot of lingonberry and blueberries(/bilberries) available in the end of the summer, but we also decided to have some berry bushes planted. On a foggy day we went to ruins of an abandoned house with Svenja and got some (possibly red-)currant bushes.

On our day off we got the gooseberry from a flea market in Kajaani. We will see if it survives the rough winter.

Lapioimisen jälkeen olemme poistaneet juuria talikolla, haralla ja käsin. Useissa työkaluissa on varsi ilmeisesti myös sen takia, että niitä käyttäen pysyy sopivalla etäisyydellä maasta: kun menee liian lähelle maata, löytyy juuria loputtomasti.

After double digging we take away most of the roots with pitchforks, hand cultivators, and just with hands. It seems the tools have the long handles also because it keeps the gardener a good distance with the soil: if you get any closer, you might get carried away with the never-ending root picking.

Vanhasta puukehikosta tehtiin runko kasvihuoneelle. Seinät ja katto tehdään kierrätetyistä rakennusmuoveista. Tarkoituksena on tehdä kasvihuoneen sisälle hyttysvapaa oleskelupaikka kesäksi. Harjannostajaisia juhlistetaan saunomalla.

An old wooden structure will serve as a frame for the green house. Plastics for the roof and walls are recycled. The green house will also be a mosquito-free lounge for summer time. Tonight we will have a roofing celebration.
