About “Ruka Kuusamo, Finland” and Danvarsh

“I captured the winning photo during a trip to Finland in February. As soon as I arrived in Rovaniemi, I rented a car and headed to Oulanka national park in Kuusamo. Upon arrival, I was astonished by the despicable beauty and scenery. I no longer felt my frozen body but only noticed how this place made me feel: happy, grateful and fulfilled.

Even if you visit the same spot, exploration will show something new. Many don’t like to go back somewhere they’ve already been. But, in my opinion, that is how you can surprise yourself and get better, see how nature changes. It is also crucial to never let yourself down and realize how strong you are when you focus on the beauty and the good of a situation, even if you are freezing!

I took a couple of similar photos with different exposure and shutter speeds as it was almost dark. It was too windy, and my hands nearly froze by taking these photos as I wasn’t using any hand warmers, and I needed to take off my gloves for perfect focus. Nevertheless, it was all worth it.

When editing this picture after two weeks, I wanted to recreate the moment and bring the same emotion to show the wonder of the place to others. So, I brought out some colors and cooled others a bit. I also had to reduce exposure as much as possible since I overexposed the photo to make the water look dreamy – See before and after. So, I brought down the highlights and increased the shadows. I did the same with the contrast in the trees and the highlights in the water stream to guide the viewer’s attention. Finally, I removed a few distractions in Photoshop.

I would love to go back again during various seasons and take photos of the same place in different weather conditions. I am sure every picture can give you a new story, emotions, and as a result, a distinct perception of nature.”
