Olemme taas poimineet elämysmuistoja kuin metsämansikoita heinään. Käväisimme valokuvausmatkalla Kuolemanlaaksossa (Death Valley) ja ihmettelemässä Las Vegasia, yhteensä neljä päivää. Kontrasti oli melkoinen, ensin autiomaassa, Yhdysvaltain kuumimmassa paikassa ja sitten maailman suurimmassa viihdekeskuksessa. Kuolemanlaaksoa kuvataan superlatiivein. on Yhdysvaltain alhaisin kohta yli 85 metriä merenpohjan alapuolella, Pahanveden altaan (Badwater Basin) pohjalla, siellä ei juuri koskaan sada ja kesällä siellä voi olla jopa 57C lämmintä. Näin keväällä ei onneksi yli 30C. Taivas yöllä on Yhdysvaltain pimein, autiomaassa valosaaste ei häiritse ja kuuttomana yönä voi nähdä Linnunradan ja muita tähtisumuja paljain silmin. Aika tuiketta, Reijo ja ystävämme Diane ottivat valokuvia vanhoista kaivosvaunuista ja minulla oli vaikeuksia erottaa Otavaa, se kun hukkui valoon.

Me lensimme Tampasta Vegasiin ja vuokrasimme auton. Ohitimme Nevadan autiomaan armeijan harjoitusmaastot, ne joilla atomipommia aikoinaan kokeiltiin. Ajoimme asfalttiteitä hylättyjen rauniokaupunkien läpi, joissa sata vuotta sitten oli vielä toiveikkaita kullankaivajia tai ammattimaista kaivostoimintaa. Pahanveden altaalle tullessamme maa näytti härmäiseltä, se on suolaa ja booriyhdisteitä. Lähes 10.000 vuotta sitten nykyisessä laaksossa oli suuri järvi, lähistöllä useita pieniä järviä, vuorilta virtasi jokia ja ne yhdistivät järvet toisiinsa. Jossain vaiheessa ilmasto muuttui kuumemmaksi, tulivuoria purkautui ja järvet kuivuivat. Kun läheisten lumihuippujen vedet valuvat laaksoon, ne haihtuvat ja kuljettavat mukanaan suoloja ja mineraaleja, jotka jäävät pintaan. Booriyhdisteitä ja boorimalmia saadaan maaperästä Kaliforniassa edelleen, kaivostoiminta jatkuu tästä luonnonpuiston alueesta länteen. Vuonna 1933 Borax-yhtiön johtaja nimeltä Zabriskie lopetti kaivostoiminnan Kuolemanlaaksosta ja alkoi houkutella turisteja alueelle perustamalla ensin Furnace Inn –hotellin. Me yövyimme alueen edullisimmassa turistikylässä nimeltä Furnace Creek Ranch lähes parisataa dollaria yö. Kun muistaa, että ollaan tuntien ajomatkan päässä kaupungeista, hinta ei ole paha ja kun nousee aamulla kuudelta ihmettelemään auringonnousua suolajärvenpohjalla tai auringonlaskua Zabriskie-näköalapaikassa, elämys on hintansa väärtti. vuotta täyttäneitä rouvia kuin Diane ja minä. Ihan kunnolla saimme puhkua, että pääsimme toiseksi korkeimman dyynin päälle, Reijo jaksoi korkeimmalle.

Kuvia otettiin, mutta yhtenä aamuna jätin tahallani kameran pois ja vain nautin maisemista. Seisoin keskellä tyhjää järveä, jonka aallot ovat kivettyneet ja jonka laituri ja uoma muistuttavat aurattua luistinrataa. Koskettelin Golden kanjonin (Golden Canyon) seinämiä ja punnitsin kädessäni vaaleanpunaista ryoliitti-palaa. Poikkesimme Saarnilaaksossa (Ash Meadows), joka on rakennettu Shoshone-intiaanien keitaalle ja joka oli juuri vastikään avattu yleisölle. Pirunreikä Devils Hole on lähde, josta vesi on pulpunnut maan pinnalle vuosituhansia. Sen läheisyyteen oltiin jo rakentamassa uutta kaupunkia, mutta luonnonsuojelijat ehtivät väliin ja pelastivat ekosysteemin, ainutlaatuisen pikkukalan Pupfish ja monia kasveja ja eläimiä. Turkoosia vesiallasta katsellessa voi kuvitella kuinka siinä on pulahdeltu vuosituhansia.

Red Rocks

Matkalla Vegasiin pistäydyimme Punaisilla kallioilla (Red Rocks). Jähmettyneiden hiekkadyynien kyljet näkyvät jopa Vegasin keskustaan. Seinämillä nuoret ja rohkeat harrastavat vuorikiipeilyä. Calico-kukkulan juurella muistelin missä olen sen sanan kuullut ja tietysti kissoista on kyse. Calico on kolmivärisyyttä, kissoissa punaisenruskea, musta ja valkoinen. Punaisilla kallioilla värit vaihtuvat tummasta terrakotta-punasta valkoiseen ja ruskeaan. Punainen väri on rautaoksidia ja valkoinen hiekkakiveä.

Las Vegas

Vegasissa emme ole koskaan käyneet, ehkä vedonlyönti ei ole meitä kiinnostanut. Olisi ollut mahdollista pelata jo lentokentällä. Katselimme Dianen kanssa ikäisiämme naisia pelikoneiden nappuloissa. Pelaajien kasvojen ilmeet ja asennot olivat niin tuskaisia ja tylsiä, että päätimme jättää pelaamisen väliin. Diane kokeili paluumatkalla lentokentällä ja voitti yli seitsemän kertaa sen mitä investoi, kahdesta dollarista tuli kuusitoista, aamiaisen verran. Keskuskatu on pelkkää kasinoa ja brändikauppaa. Las Vegas venetsia

hotellikasinoitten kylttejä ja sisällä näkee miltä kyseisessä kohteessa maailmalla näyttää. On Pariisi Eiffeltornineen ja maanalaisen asemineen, on Venetsia gondoliajeluineen, on Egyptin pyramidit, jopa Bellagio Pohjois-Italiasta kertoo järvimaisemasta ja Como-järven huviloista, vain Lappi poroineen puuttuu. Bellagion suihkubaletin katselimme kolme kertaa, se on insinööritieteen mestarinäyte, kuulemma riittävästi pelaava saa valita musiikin puolen tunnein välein aloitettavaan esitykseen. Mirage-hotellin tulivuorenpurkaus jää toiseksi. Me asuimme New Yorkissa, ala-aulassa Time Square ja muutama keskustan katu palotikkaineen.

Las Vegas “strip”

Vegas on elämys. Caesar-palatsin roomalaiskadut Trevi-suihkulähteineen ja kattoon maalattuine pilvineen antavat vaikutelman ulkoilmasta, vaikka sisätiloissa ollaan. Jopa niin että kadulla on tuulisempaa kuin ravintoloissa tai kaupoissa sisällä. H&M on upeasti esillä italialaisten ja ranskalaisten superbrändien kyljessä. Uusimmista ostoskeskuksista upein on Aria, ulos kadulle näkyvät italialaisbrändit ovat esillä kiehtovasti toteutetuissa rakennuksissa, on vinoa kulmaa, kiillettä, lasitaidetta ja vesiefektejä. Elämyksellisintä Vegasissa on Cirque du Soleil , jonka esityksiä eri hotellien teattereissa pyörii samanaikaisesti kuusi tai seitsemän joka ilta ja sen lisäksi yhtiö kierrättää esityksiä

eri puolille Yhdysvaltoja ja Eurooppaan. Me valitsimme Beatles/Love –esityksen ja on pakko todeta, että vaikka olemme nähneet musikaaleja Lontoossa, sirkusta Sarasotassa, teatteria New Yorkissa, oopperaa Veronassa ja Savonlinnassa, klassista musiikkia jopa Dubrovnikin kirkkoraunioilla ja Jazzia Porissa, tämä show nousi yhdeksi makeimmaksi mansikaksi keräämääni elämysnauhaan. Miragen teatteri on suunniteltu ja rakennettu juuri tätä esitystä varten, yleisö ympäröi lavaa, alussa lava oli jaettu sektioihin läpikuultavilla kankailla, kuulimme aitoja Beatlesien nauhoituksia, jopa puhetta, kaiuttimet ovat tehokkaat, kaiuttimet tuolin niskatuessa tuovat musiikin korviin. Lucy in the sky with diamonds jäi mieleen tytön keinuessa trapetsilla timanttien tuikkeessa. Toinen mieleenpainuva oli Octopus Garden jonka värikylläiset mustekalalonkerot loivat satumaisen tunnelman. Taitavinta akrobatiaa näimme Help-esityksessä, jossa pojat liukuivat ja hyppäsivät rullalaudoilla poliiseja pakoon. Vegasin lentokenttää ei kannata muistella. Jonotus oli pahemmassa epäjärjestyksessä kuin kehitysmaiden kentillä. Onneksi emme olleet myöhässä.

superlatives describing both Death Valley and Las Vegas. Death Valley is the largest national park of the United States, including the Badwater Basin salt pan, the lowest point in North America, at 282 feet below sea level. It also is the hottest place in the US as the summer temperatures frequently soar above 120 F. At this time of the year the temperatures linger around 80F and it is breezy. We planned our time in Death Valley with our friend Sue Karski, who had visited it a couple of years ago and marked down even the

Zabriskie point

minutes driving from one view point to another. Zabriskie Point that is the view point to see around the old mining area, and as Sue put it, it surely is best at sunset when the colours of the mountains change from chocolate brown, orange, pink, lilac and white with black shadows to enhance them all. Zabriskie was the vice president of Pacific Coast Borax company in the 1920’s when the company stopped mining of borax at Death Valley, and opened the area for tourists. The first hotel called Furnace Inn was built in the early 1930’s, and it still is the best there is. We stayed at Furnace Creek Ranch that is not as expensive, and it even had some old wagons and tools used in mining in the area. Obviously it was gold that the first explorers around 1849 tried to find at Death Valley. The

49’s who ended up near Furnace Creek on Christmas Eve 1849 were actually lost after having travelled for two months since leaving the so called Spanish Trail and gold was never found at Death Valley but some silver and talc and borate, but the soil has a number of metals including iron and titan and some semi-precious stones. Most of Death Valley’s mining operation failed within a few years of opening, leaving eerie ghost towns behind. At Borax Works close to Furnace Creek there are a few wagons to be photographed under the starry sky. As we drove there after dinner and before midnight and before the moonrise we were able to experience the night skies at their glory. Jupiter and Venus dominate the view, and we could trace a bit of the Milky Way, stars clustering and somewhere there is also another galaxy to be seen with the naked eye. For me the sky was too lit up to detect any normally easily found star formations like the big dipper. The archaeological studies indicate that the American Indians have lived in the area already 10.000 years ago. The climate was much cooler then and the Badwater Basin was a large lake surrounded by several smaller lakes, all connected to each other with a number of rivers. The Shoshone Indians still inhabit some parts of the Valley. We saw a presentation video at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge that explained how the desert has changed over the millennia. There we saw natural springs bringing up water from deep down, where the oasis of the Indians. It is easy to imagine how they have enjoyed the water fountains and the small fish (Pupfish) and the plants and trees around.

Furnace Creek has recorded the second highest temperature in the world, 134F, those figures are competing with the conditions in Sahara Desert. It also is an experience to walk on the North America’s lowest point at 282 feet below sea level. We went there on a sunrise, and Badwater looked like a frozen lake in Finland from the parking lot with the salt glimmering as if it was time to put skates on. As I walked further the ground turned to petrified waves, it was as I was standing on a brown lake or on a badly ploughed frozen field. them, sat down on it and were amazed. First of all we could not see Reijo who was somewhere on the highest of dunes and secondly we could only see a couple of guys all much younger than us. So we were proud of ourselves. We also wandered about the flat stones between the dunes as if someone had built a terrace. Later at Red Rocks we learned that the sandstone and calc and salts eventually harden into stones and the wind blows them into beautifully laid out areas. So evidently some day after our time the dunes will be petrified into rock. Vegas is an experience starting from the airport. One could start gambling already there. The airport is a so close to the strip of casinos and hotels that if it was allowed to walk from the aircraft, one could get there sooner on foot than via the tram and the endless corridors to find the luggage and the car hire booths.

We stayed at New York New York hotel that is in the middle of the strip. We ate breakfast by Time Square. I did not know that Vegas had all these places in the world along a two-mile avenue. Paris had the copy of Eiffel Tower as well as the Art Nuveau designs of the

underground stations, including The Arc of Triumph, and Venice had all the Square of San Marco and the gondolas. I had the possibility to sing along with the gondola girl. Caesar Palace had a street inside that was like walking in Rome, even the Trevi fountain was there. That seems to be oldest of them all built already in 1960’s whereas most of the hotels have been rebuilt in the late 1990’s. So one can admire the prettiest towns in the world walking from one casino to another. There is even Bellagio that originally is from Lake Como close to us in Italy, in Vegas it boasts about the most beautiful attractions, a water show sprouting along with music that is changing from classic to rock and roll every hour. We also visited the pyramids of Egypt one of the many MGM resorts in Vegas. The most beautiful of the new ones is Aria that has been built in 2006 that also has nice water effects and amazing structures and it houses the most famous Italian brands.

Las Vegas shopping

We did not gamble much, just 2 dollars that Diane put in. She actually won 16.10 dollars, the value of the breakfast. We looked at the women of our age who looked so miserable by the gambling machines that we decided not to get involved until at the airport when we had a few minutes to wait to get onboard. The best of all is the entertainment in the evening. There are five or six Cirque du Soleil shows going on at the same time at different hotels, and the company also travels with a few shows around the world, even in Finland. We chose Beatles Love at Mirage. Though I have seen different shows in London, Helsinki, Paris, New York this one surely was something special. The dais was designed for the show, a large audience sitting around, in the beginning the views were limited by see through curtains cutting the audience into sectors, the sound system was excellent, sound was coming through even from the cushion on the back of the seat. Beatles original sound tracks were played and even some discussions they have had in the recording studio. So, the show was circus. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was great with a girl gliding in the air and Octopus Garden was played with colourful clothing building up the undersea world, Help was acrobatic roller blade presentation and in one of the numbers they covered the audience with a sheet bringing up childhood memories for many. The show ended too early, the ninety minutes just flashed away. This will never be forgotten.
