Saints And Silences (I)
Last autumn I had a kind of retreat of silence in southern Italian countryside. Living quietly, wandering in lonely chapels, narrow alleys and rocky shores, meditating moment and eternity to mingle together.
Rumi, the great Sufi mystic and poet, wrote much about silence. For Rumi, secret ”is wrapped in silence”:
”Live in silence”
”My soul sits in silence”
”Let silence take you to the core of life”
Viime syksynä minulla oli eräänlainen hiljaisuuden retriitti eteläisen Italian maaseudulla. Vaatimaton majoitus, vaeltamista yksinäisissä kappeleissa, kapeilla kujilla ja kalliorannoilla, hetken ja ikuisuuden yhteenlankeamisen mietiskelyä.
Rumi, suuri sufimystikko ja runoilija, kirjoitti paljon hiljaisuudesta. Rumille salaisuus on kiedottu hiljaisuuteen:
”Elä hiljaisuudessa”
”Sieluni istuu hiljaisuudessa”
”Anna hiljaisuuden viedä sinut elämän ytimeen”
Venetian Apparitions and Whispers
This ethereal pastel-shaded saint The Madonna of Unheard Whispers (2024, digital painting by Ulla Karttunen) appears in Venice during Biennale Artbox Expo Venezia 2.0, April 10–30, 2024, at the Cipriarte Gallery, Riva S. Biasio, 2147.
”Lovers whisper to God all night”, says Rumi. God does not answer, but the waves of the lagoons do. And the poet Rumi continues telling what is important:
”Water, stories, the body, all the things we do, are mediums that hid and show what’s hidden.”

Vajoavia kaupunkeja
Kaksi maailman ikonisinta kaupunkia mielletään päinvastaisiksi: New York kiviseksi ja korkealle kohoavaksi, Venetsia vetiseksi ja vajoavaksi.
Vastakohtaisilta vaikuttavilla kaupungeilla saattaa kuitenkin olla yhtäläinen kohtalo, vajoaminen.
New York on vajoamassa uudeksi Venetsiaksi. Manhattan painuu korkeiden rakennustensa painon alaisena maan alle. Manhattanista on tulossa alle 80 vuodessa vedenalainen kaupunki, ilmastoasiantuntijat varoittavat.
Ehkä vajoaminen on vastaavasti säädetty juuri fiineimmiksi kohonneiden kaupunkien oppimäärään.
On uskottava hukkumiseen, sillä miten muuten voit koskettaa (olemisen) pohjaa ja perustaa, tuota alati pakenevaa ja kiinnisaamatonta.

Olemattomuuteen haihtuvaa ja katoavan marginaalista taidetta uppoavissa kaupungeissa: huhtikuussa 2024 Ulla Karttusen taidetta on nähtävissä kahden vajoavan kaupungin, New Yorkin ja Venetsian, neljässä kontekstissa (kolme näyttelypaikkaa ja yksi julkaisu). Paikkoja ja päivämääriä löytyy parista edellisestä postauksesta.

White Magic of Ostuni
Ostuni, a small town in Puglia, is called La Citta Bianca, The White City. In this southern Italian town, all the houses are brightly whitewashed.
In the 17th century, only a few villages survived the plague in Puglia. Ostuni was among them. The residents had invented to cover the buildings and walls with limestone mixed with water. Lime washing did not only illuminate narrow dark streets, it was a means of disinfection, a matter of life and death.
In this dazzling whiteness Ostuni carries such a poetic atmosphere. You believe again that only miracles make the truest reality.
