A Centaur’s Life episode 04–Vagina Positivity

No, really.

This episode begins with our centaur Hime becoming embarrassed unexpectedly at possibly receiving a love letter from some angel boy. She is visibly nervous and runs as soon as Hime-tachi’s train makes its stop.  After much prodding from her friends, she recounts her fear of her own vulva stemming from a childhood memory in which a boy claims asks if Hime will get a cow’s vulva [which seems to be an especially frightening vulva to Hime for some reason]. Consequently, she has avoided looking at vulvas, including her own.

Nozomi decides they must look at each other’s vaginas in solidarity, a la Fried Green Tomatoes.  Unlike Evelyn Couch, the girls get it done. Nozomi has no issue with it, but Kyouko must be forced, which is not cool Nozomi. They finally look at Hime’s and tell her it is pretty. Yay vagina positivity! I’m not being facetious by the way, too many women and girls really do have issues with their own vulva, and learning that differences in vulvas is normal is a great lesson to learn.

Unfortunately that angel boy just had to go and make Hime self-conscious with a dumbass comment about her breasts. Way to go angelbro. Yeesh.

The second episode starts out rather dull. The girls are studying, Nozomi is not good at it and seems to be lazy. Kyouko attempts to unsuccessfully whip her into shape. She finally encourages her by stressing that they will not take field trips or graduate together if Nozomi falls behind. The latter gets to work and promptly burns out. While tired, she spots a UFO.

This leads into an interesting discussion about UFOs, and Antarcticans, the snakepeople of this world. It is theorized by Hime’s society that these snake people possess vast technology and could be the ones behind UFOs, but this could be urban legend and rumor as well. I’m guessing the fact that these snake people live in the Antarctic has geographically isolated them from the rest of the world. Accordingly much said about them can be taken with a grain of salt. However, they are at odds with America for unspecified reasons, and perhaps the god Quetzalcoatl was based on a real Anctarctican figure.

Later, the girls go to school to find heightened security [Nozomi’s older friend/acquaintence/relative is a security guard]. Kyouko, who seems to be a rather asute goat girl had pointed out earlier that something seemed different.

We quickly find that Hime’s school now has an Antartican classmate. I think she’s cute.

Hime is terrified. Gee, isn’t there anything that doesn’t scare Hime?

Observations

  • I have no idea if Nozomi’s UFO was real or just some sort of waking dream.
  • That Kyouko seems to be very mindful and possibly the smartest girl in the batch.
  • Having an Antartican in school represents a security risk. Why?
  • The nations we have in our world are clearly represented in Hime’s world. America, Japan, and even some historical points such as the Third Reich.
  • If you guys didn’t flashback to Fried Green Tomatoes watching this episode, you have no movie culture–go watch that movie now! Better yet, read the book! Fannie Flagg wrote it, you won’t be disappointed! One of the greatest films of the 90s.
  • Nozomi states that Hime can’t see her own vulva, but c’mon, it’s easiest for you Hime. Just lift your tail and look back in the mirror. Don’t even need a hand mirror.
