Tuunattu kirjakori – Painted book storage bin
Kässävuoden maaliskuun teemana oli kierrätys. Hieman jäi tämä projekti viime tippaan, mutta sain kuin sainkin sen valmiiksi ennen maaliskuun loppua! Tällä kertaa jätin ompelut sikseen ja tuunailin olohuoneeseen säilytyspaikan kirjaston kirjoille, joiden pinot ovat vallanneet sohvapöydän.
Finnish craft bloggers’ challenge for the March was Recycling. I was pretty late but I finally managed to make something before the end of the month! This time I didn’t sew anything but decided to make a storage bin for the pile of library books that has overtaken our coffee table.
Löysin käsittelemättömän puisen korin Kierrätyskeskuksesta. Se oli varmaan alunperin tarkoitettu aikakauslehdille. Kori oli oikein siistissä kunnossa ja pienet liatkin lähtivät kostealla pyyhkimällä. Prismasta löytyi Rust Oleum Chalky Finish kalustemaalia, jolla maalasin korin valkoiseksi (kuvan linkki vie kuitenkin Amazon.co.uk-verkkokauppaan)
I found unfinished wooden basket/box/bin/whatever-it-is-called from the local Recycling centre. The basket was in a good condition and I removed the few smudges with a damp rag. Then I picked up Rust Oleum Chalky Finish furniture paint from the local grocery store and painted the basket white (the link in the picture takes you to the Amazon.co.uk page)
Tämä maali oli kätevää käyttää, sillä se ei haissut ollenkaan ja kuivui nopeasti. Työskentelinkin sisällä olohuoneessa remonttipaperin päällä. Pienin mahdollinen purkki 125 ml kului tähän projektiin kokonaisuudessaan ja toista maalikerrosta siitä ei saanut. Toisaalta yksikin kerros peitti ihan riittävän hyvin.
This paint is practically odourless and it dries up very quickly. I did the whole project in our living room on a piece of brown paper. I used all the paint from the smallest 125 ml paint can and there wasn’t enough paint for the second coat. However, I think that in this
Noin tunnin kuluttua maali oli jo tarpeeksi kuivaa, jotta pystyin jatkamaan työtäni. Tulostin paperille sanan Kirjat peilikuvana ja piirsin sitten sanan ääriviivat pehmeällä lyijykynällä. Tämän jälkeen laitoin paperin tekstipuoli alaspäin korin päälle ja hankasin kynällä nurjalta puolelta siirtääkseni merkit maalipintaan.
After about an hour the paint was dry enough for me to continue. I printed out the mirror image of the word “Kirjat” meaning “Books” and traced the outline with a soft pencil. Then I rubbed from the wrong side with the same pencil to transfer the markings to the paint.
Tämän jälkeen pystyin ääriviivojen avulla värittämään sanan mustalla maalilla, kun käytin ohutta vesivärisivellintä.
The markings are faint but enough for me to fill them in with some black paint using a very thin watercolour paint brush.
Nyt kirjaston kirjat voi säilöä sohvan vieressä siististi ja koko kasan voi siirtää kahvasta nostamalla pois tieltä.
Now the library books can be stored in the bin next to the couch and the whole pile can be moved out of the way if needed.
Tämä projekti oli mukava ja nopea toteuttaa ja ratkaisi pitkään mieltäni kaivaneen säilytysongelman. Kokonaisuudessaan kirjakorin askarteluun meni ehkä kaksi tuntia, ellei materiaalien hankkimista lasketa ja tästäkin ajasta suurin osa oli maalin kuivumisen odottelua.
This project was nice and quick to make and solved a storage problem that has been bothering me for a long time. On the whole, it took about 2 hours, if you don’t count buying the materials, and even then most of it was me waiting for the paint to dry.
