Jimmy Loves His Long Hair
I had the pleasure of helping a dear friend, teacher, and self published author with a children’s book for his 4th grade class about gender norms and being unapologetically yourself. In addition to illustrating the pages, I turned all of them into GIFs for a digital read-along.
The main character is Jimmy. Jimmy has long hair. Although he loves his long hair, he is constantly bullied at school and even gets confused for a girl by the adults. His mother tries to somewhat comfort him, because after all, Jimmy’s father had long hair, and he was a rockstar.
But one day, a new girl struts in. Her name is Charlie, short for Charlize. She rocks a purple buzz cut with black combat boots. Jimmy is in awe of her confidence and they instantly become friends. With someone like Charlie by his side, he is no longer afraid to be himself.
