Superb woodcut folio from Gessner's encyclopaedic work Zurich: Christopher Froschauer, 1558 (this issue ca 1580). Reference: Nissen Vogelbuch 59. Conrad Gessner was a Renaissance polymath, a physician, philosopher, encyclopaedist, bibliographer, philologist, natural historian and illustrator. Fine cream 16th century folio. Later hand colour. Minor marginal spots.
