Police tell drivers 'our hands are tied' as Just Stop Oil stage more slow marches through north and south London with NO arrests - despite causing traffic misery for motorists on day of snow chaos

  • Just Stop Oil were out again with another slow march in south London today
  • The eco-mob were not deterred by freezing temperatures, snow and icy roads
  • They caused more misery for drivers stuck in traffic due to the weather
  • Protesters then headed to Camden in north London for further action
  • Police reportedly told a driver trying to get through 'our hands are tied'

Police reportedly told a driver 'our hands are tied' as eco-protesters Just Stop Oil caused more misery for Londoners stuck in snow chaos by blocking roads with yet another day of slow marching.

From 8.15am, 20 demonstrators walked onto the A24 near Clapham South and continued along Clapham High Street 'to demand that the government halts all new fossil fuel licences and consents'.

It was the first of two marches today as demonstrators then headed to Camden Town, north London, causing more disruption.

Just Stop Oil members reportedly chanted 'I would rather be disrupted than be dead' and 'you can't be late for work when you're dead' to the tune of Coming Round the Mountain.

Brits already faced travel chaos with heavy snowfall overnight turning into icy conditions, and many drivers stuck in long queues. The protests pushed some drivers over the edge, causing them to shout expletives and honk their horns.

Police told a Tesla driver who got out of his car during the demo in Clapham - 'our hands are tied,' according to the Telegraph.

The Tesla driver said 'I'm f* electric, let me through' but was told by a protester 'it's all about disruption.'

A spokesman for the Met Police told the MailOnline there had been no arrests today.

In a tweet the group said: 'The government has threatened new legislation before Christmas to 'close loopholes' that allow Just Stop Oil supporters to march in the road, thus confirming the suspicions that the only protests that the government will allow are those that nobody notices.'

Adam Beard, 53, a gardener and carer said: 'I'm taking action to highlight our government's total disregard for human life and suffering in the pursuit of short-term profit.

'Not only are they issuing new fossil fuel licences, but they have now given the go-ahead for a new coal mine which will produce the dirtiest kind of fuel there is, almost all of which will be exported.

'This exposes the massive gap between what government ministers say and what they do.'

Elvy Swan, 21, from Melbourne, Australia said: 'As young people we need to stand up to the reality we are faced with. Our generation is on the front line of a catastrophe far more significant than we could have conceived of.

'We are talking about people dying now. People that could have been saved. We don't have time to squabble about the specifics of change making. We must end new oil and gas.'

A spokesperson from Just stop Oil added: 'Greenlighting a new coal mine signals that our Government does not care about everyday people or democracy. Their support and backing of new coal, oil and gas, is a plan to destroy our freedoms, our rights and the rule of law.

'It is a plan that will result in the deaths of countless millions and many more not knowing if they should stay where they have lived for generations or if they leave where they can go.

'The real savagery hits home when you realise that most people in this country, and across the world want what Just Stop Oil is calling for 'no new fossil fuels'.

'Government is silencing dissent by locking up ordinary people, calling for an end to new oil and gas, bringing in new laws and taking away your right to walk down the public highway. You don't get to cheerlead dissent abroad while demanding heavy handed tactics at home.

'We ask that you join us, the time to stand-by has passed, we must resist or lose everything'.

This comes after dozens of Just Stop Oil protesters gathered in Parliament Square before marching through central London on Saturday afternoon, chanting their demands that the Government halts all new fossil fuel contracts.

They stopped outside the Home Office where they held up their iconic orange Just Stop Oil signs and a long banner reading: 'No prison for peaceful protest'.

Six weeks of continuous disruption and civil resistance by supporters of Just Stop Oil during October and November has resulted in over 700 arrests.

Since the campaign began on April 1, Just Stop Oil supporters have been arrested over 2,000 times, with 24 supporters currently in prison, they say.

Commuters were advised to stay at home after snow and ice wreaked havoc across the whole of the southeastern railway network, while the London Underground was also hit by delays.

Yellow weather warnings for snow, ice and fog are in force across much of the UK, including an ice warning in eastern and south-east England until 11am on Tuesday.

AA president Edmund King said the number of breakdown callouts is around 25 per cent higher than normal. He said: 'Many drivers were stranded or severely delayed on the northern section of the M25 last night between London Colney and the M11.

'Traffic is still severely delayed there this morning due to the continuous snow fall.

'The conditions show that it is essential to be prepared if you are driving.'

He urged drivers to check fuel levels and take warm clothing, a charged mobile phone, food and drink.

The Met Office has warned of more travel chaos to come as heavy snowfall overnight turns into icy conditions and freezing fog descends, sparking severe disruption on roads, railways and runways, as well as forcing thousands of schools to shut.
