Soupy Leaves Home Educator's Guide Dark Horse Releases Educator's Guide for "Soupy Leaves Home"

Soupy Leaves Home is a graphic novel written by Cecil Castellucci and illustrated by Jose Pimienta. Set in the early 1930s in the heart of the Great Depression, this is a story about two hoboes: one young, named Soupy, and one much older, named Ramshackle. Together they journey across country while healing their hearts, facing their respective demons, and evaluating their paths and dreams.

Synopsis: Pearl Plankette ran away from her home to escape an abusive father and an unhappy future. Disguised and reborn as a boy named Soupy, she hitches her star to an unlikely hobo, and they begin their journey from the cold heartbreak of their eastern homes toward the sunny promise of California in this train-hopping, Depression-era coming-of-age tale.

Soupy Leaves Home has received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, which describes it as "a compelling graphic offering that explores relevant gender roles and self-identity through a historical lens." This book is an outstanding read for people age 12 and up.
