Bradley Cooper has been confirmed to star in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The actor will voice machine-gun wielding character Rocket Raccoon in the superhero movie directed by James Gunn, Marvel Studios has announced.

Guardians of the Galaxy will also star Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana and Glenn Close, and is currently in production at the UK's Shepperton Studios.

The film centres on a jet pilot called Peter Quill who must bring together a team of aliens - among them Gamora (Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon - to see off threats to the galaxy.

Cooper is also in talks to play cyclist Lance Armstrong, and will next be seen in Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell's American Hustle.

Guardians of the Galaxy will release on August 1, 2014.
