1973 Ford LTD Barn Find is the Epitome of ‘70s Style

American, Classics  /   /  By Jim Travers

The term “Barn Find” has become a generic way to describe any desirable classic car hidden from view for years. However, in many cases, those gems are not actually discovered in a barn, garage, or shed.

But the 1973 Ford LTD Brougham now offered for sale on eBay is the real deal.

Photos in the listing show the LTD emerging from the cluttered garage where it spent the last 30 years. The one-owner 1973 car shows just 18,433 miles on the odometer.

Top of the Line

Pete Krell, the LTD’s Dallas-based seller, is a self-described “picker.” Krell said:

The owner had passed, and the family decided to sell the car. It had flat tires, and it had been sitting so long it took us two and a half hours to load [on a trailer]. We put tires on it, cleaned it up, gave it a tune-up with a new battery and spark plugs, and it started right up.

The LTD Brougham was Ford’s top-of-the-line model in 1973. The Brougham’s extensive options list allowed buyers to customize the sedan with numerous upscale appointments.

This barn-find example is generously equipped with power steering and brakes, factory air, and an AM/FM stereo.

The LTD’s original vinyl roof is still in excellent condition. The factory gloss black paint retains a good shine and lends a formal look to this elegant coupe. Optional opera windows in the rear pillars are the epitome of 1970s style.

A Powerful Engine, Supported by Available Parts

An optional 400-cubic-inch V-8 engine is under the hood. That’s a step up from the standard 351-cubic-inch V-8. The more powerful engine is paired with the original three-speed automatic transmission.

This powertrain should be capable of propelling the 4,000-pound land yacht with smooth and abundant power. But even with Krell’s recent tune-up, the full-size Ford will need some elbow grease to make it road-worthy.

The gas tank, fuel lines, and brakes need attention for openers. Fortunately, most shade tree mechanics can address these everyday needs. And vintage LTD parts are inexpensive and readily available on eBay.

Priced to Sell

The temperate Texas garage was good to the LTD. The car is solid inside and out. Surface rest is minimal, and there’s no body damage.

Documentation included with the sale includes an inspection certificate from 1991—showing just eight fewer miles than the car has today. The brake and gas pedals show minimal wear, further evidence of the 1973 LTD’s incredibly low mileage.

Why the original owner decided to park this LTD and leave it for decades remains a mystery. But a new owner stands to gain from that long-forgotten decision. This 1973 LTD barn find is a well-preserved time capsule offered at the fair Buy-It-Now price of $6,500. Or place your best bid.
