Broccoli does not care for heat and will bolt prematurely, heat can also affect the shape of the broccoli.
Indoor Sow: 8 - 12 weeks before last frost in peat pots (roots are sensitive to disturbances). Harden off plants at least 1 week before transplanting outdoors.
Direct Sow: Spring: 2 - 3 weeks before the last expected frost and again in late-summer for fall/winter harvest (85-100 days before first expected frost). Sow about 1/2" deep and about 24" apart.
Note: Make sure to keep your broccoli plants watered, but take care to not get the developing broccoli heads wet while watering.
Harvest: Harvest your broccoli when you see that the buds of the head are firm. Cut the stalk of the main head at a slant, and smaller side shoots will grow up from where you’ve cut. Make sure to harvest your broccoli before the yellow flower petals start to show - those parts have a mealy texture.
