Slightly over 35 years ago, BBC Weatherman Michael Fish took part in one of the most famous weather forecasts of all time. Speaking on October 15 1987, the presenter said: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way; well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't, but having said that, actually, the weather will become very windy, but most of the strong winds, incidentally, will be down over Spain and across into France."

Fish has gone on to claim in subsequent years that his comment was taken out of context. Whatever the case however the remarks have gone down in history as a massive gaffe - and what followed that night as one of the worst storms in modern British history.

The storm, simply known as The Great Storm of 1987, battered the south of England and northern France with hurricane force winds. The storm, which battered the two countries overnight, left at least 22 dead in its aftermath.
