Hom is the last of his kind. I don't know what kind of creature he is, and nobody knows he exists... apart from me.

When a boy washes up on a desert island, he is sure he's on his own in the world. But there's someone else living there: Hom, a peace-loving creature who has lost his family, too. Adorable. That is the perfect word to describe this treasure. I loved the illustrations, I loved the moving story of friendship and togetherness. A young boy is shipwrecked, he lands up on an island all alone. All alone except for a small creature, the same size as him. This is Hom. He has a green body and is a great companion. This is their story. It is a total delight. A real awwww book.

Tarinassa on useampia tasoja. Humin kerrotaan olevan lajinsa viimeinen. Lapsi ei välttämättä hahmota mitä Humin perheelle on tapahtunut, kun taas aikuiselle luolan seinille hahmotellut maalaukset kertovat omaa synkkää kieltään.

Donnellyn kuvitus on ihan tyylikästä.

A lone boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on an island where one other inhabitant lives. A small and friendly creature named ‘Hom’. He is the last of his kind and has been living alone on the island for sometime. Realising they have nothing to fear from one another and understanding that they are both alone, they embark on a fantastic friendship filled with laughter, fun and games.
Rescuers eventually come for the boy, but the boy is so fearful for his friend as he knows his friend won’t fit in his world. What will he choose to do?

I would say this book is for readers around 3-8 years old. Young readers who love adventure will enjoy this book.
You can share many discussions with young readers about the topics in this book such as friendship, kindness & making connections with others and the natural world around us. You can also ask questions like:

What would it be like to be ship wrecked?

Would you stay or leave when the rescuers arrive?

The theme of this story looks at how society treats outsiders. This is a thoughtful tale that will find its way into the hearts of the readers. A beautiful story of friendship that crosses languages, appearances and prejudice. This book touches on courage, empathy, love, friendship, kindness, acceptance and embracing the differences between ourselves and others.

The illustrations are really beautiful and detailed. You will notice more details, the more times you read the book.

I was drawn to this because it seemed like an interesting story and had great illustrations, but I think the kids didn't quite know what to think of it. They loved the pictures though.

I paired it with a reveal-a-picture activity beforehand to introduce the idea of hidden things. We also drew Hom afterwards, which they enjoyed.

Enchanting story. Luscious illustrations.
This book is the perfect blend of my childhood love of survival stories and interspecies friendships, with the ending I always would have wished for.
