Nine Naag Devatas in Ancient Hinduism The names of the 9 Naag Devatas are Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabh, Kambal, Shankhapal, Dhrutrashtra, Takshaka and Kalia. Nagas are fierce deities, full of occult power and prone to be offended, but on the other hand all the major Indic religions, Hindu Buddhist and Jain have given them a prominent place of honor which endures to this day. They were great benefactors to manavas or humans. Srimad Bhagavad (5:24-31) Beneath Rasatala is another planetary system, known as Patala or Nagaloka, where there are many demoniac serpents, the masters of Nagaloka, such as Sankha, Kulika, Mahasankha, Sveta, Dhananjaya, Dhrtarastra, Sankhacuda, Kambala, Asvatara and Devadatta. The chief among them is Vasuki. The class of Nagas along with Yakshas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras etc. were not fully humans, though some of them could assume human forms. Nagas are children of Kadru and three most prominent among them are Shesha, Vasuki and Taksha. While Shesha is the dispassionate one with very high degree of tapas who acts as the support of entire universe thus being linked to notion of Dharma, Vasuki is a wise and very powerful Naga as well who adornes Shiva-Shakti and hence connected to Kundalini (energy system Ida Pingala). Shesha Naga; Once Upon Nagas in their underworld were attacked by their Gandharva relatives led by their king Vishvavasu. The Gandharvas defeated the snakes and took away their jewels and treasures. Nagas then resorted to the patronage of the great God Vishnu. He descended into the underworld, expelled the Gandharvas from there, and forced them to return the loot to the Nagas. The thousand-headed universal serpent Shesha, also called Ananta, the Infinite, the brother of King Vasuki, the largest of the snakes, became a friend and companion of Vishnu. Floating on the surface of the universal waters, it serves from that time as the support and bed of Vishnu, when the great God rests and sleeps. #SpiritualBharat #naga #Naag #nagdevta #nagindance #shivashakti #hindustan #भगवान #dranadisahoo #NagaPanchami #manasa #vasuki #hinduism #HinduRashtra #hindu #मंदिर #LifeLessons #jyotirling #deva #devi #spiritual #phylosophy #energy

Manasa propitiated the God Shiva, who pleased and granted her divine powers. She later worshiped him through rituals, in which she gained established Goddess status within Hinduism. She is also known as Vishahari (destroyer of poison), Yagad Gauri, Nitya (eternal), and Padmavati. Myths of her emphasize her sadness and bad mood due to the rejection of her father, the sage Yarat Karu, and the hatred of her stepmother. Patanjali is at present the only Naga deva still in public consciousness and that is because of Chidambaram and the Yoga Sutras. He is not understood in his proper magnitude and stature either. The Nagas withdrew by and large from interaction with Humans as our greed and lusts deeply offended them. Now they help only the deadly serious yogis. Mucalinda (Muchalinda or Mucilinda); With the spread of Buddhism in India, myths began to attribute the salvation of the Buddha to the snake, and this salvation took place on the banks of the Niranjana River under an old fig tree. The demon Mara made a terrible storm to prevent the Buddha from reaching enlightenment. But a vast cobra upset the intrigues of the demon. The snake wrapped itself around the body of the Buddha seven times and protected him from rain and wind.

Vasuki Naga; Another mighty serpent, the seven-headed Vasuki, is constantly worn by Lord Shiva as a sacred thread. With the help of Vasuki, the gods obtained the drink of immortality, Amrita, by churning the ocean. The celestials used the snake as a rope to rotate the giant whorl – Mount Mandara. Kaliya Naga; As depicted in Mahabharata, the five-headed Naga Kaliya once seriously angered the gods. It poisoned the water of the Yamuna river. Its poison was so strong that even the birds that flew over this river fell dead. In addition, the insidious snake stole cows from local shepherds and devoured them. Then the famous Krishna, the eighth earthly incarnation of the supreme God Vishnu, came to the aid of the people. Manasa Naga Devi; The Goddess Manasa is depicted with four arms that hold a conch shell and a lotus, another hand performing a mudra, and is seated on a lotus flower, protected by her brother, the serpent Vasuki. She is mainly worshiped in Bengal and other regions of northeastern India, mainly for the prevention and cure of snake bites and also for fertility and prosperity.

In Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha kanda, Sarga 7) the asura inspire Ravana "After proceeding to Bhogavati city (the above of the Nagas in Patala, one of the seven regions under the earth), the serpents there were defeated by you. Kubera (the bestower of riches) who resides on the peak of Mount Kailasa, surrounded by many yakshas surrendered to you after doing a great battle.” Takshaka, on the other hand, is a dear friend of Indra but is inimical towards humans, partly due to Arjuna burning the Khandava and Janamejaya almost killing the entire race of Nagas only to be stopped at final moment by Rishi Astika, a Half Naga. The links of naga with s’ankha and riches (Kubera’s s’ankha nidhi) points to the people who were s’ankha workers. S’ankhadvipa is not far from the mouth of Rivers Narmada and Tapati which emanate from the region where naga are venerated surrounding the nearby irrigation tanks of Vidisha. The link with maritime people who created Sarasvati civilization is clearly indicated out by these metaphors.

The shadow planets Rahu and Ketu are believed to be snake-forms only, where the former is regarded as the head of the serpent, while the latter, the tail. These heavenly bodies are also considered malefic by nature, which can cause harms and impediments in the lives of the people when they are placed in a disadvantageous position. There are many legends associated with Nag Panchami, the first being that the festival is celebrated to honor serpents (snakes and Nags), who are directly related to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Lord Vishnu Himself sleeps on Shisha and Shisha is His resting place, Lord Shiva always keeps Vasuki snake on his neck. The Vasuki snake had played a very important role during Samundra Manthan when he was used as rope by Devatas and Danavas to churn the ocean. The snakes (Naga) are the rulers of Pataalloka (underworld) and sons of Kashyapa, Brahmas son. The other legend is that on this day Lord Krishna as a young boy subdued Kaliya, the 1000 hooded serpent.

The below list ranks from the strongest (evolutionary energy) first to the weakest last: Devas; The strongest of all of them. Devas originated from Aditi, wife of Kashyapa. They possessed superior strength and were invincible with weapons. Indra was the king of devas. They kept the world in world. In some ocassions, like King Bali and Ravana’s son Meghnad had defeated Indra but more often the devas ruled the world. Daityas / Asuras / Rakshasas; Qualities of Asuras is described negative by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita (the only difference was their goal and attitude). Danavas were a race descending from sage Kashyapa and Danu. Asuras and Danavas were half brothers of Devtas. According to Vishnu Purana, during the churning of the ocean, the daityas came to be known as Asuras because they rejected Varuni, the Goddess of wine, while the devas accepted her and came to be known as Suras. Vanaras; The word "Vanara" is derived from the word vana ("forest"), and nara ("man"), means "belonging to the forest" or "forest-dwelling creatures". They are powerful and have many godly traits. In the Ramayana, the Vanaras help Rama defeat Ravana. Also in the Ramayana, the Vanara Hanuman changes shape several times because of having Asta Siddhis.

"Of weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows I am the surabhi, givers of abundant milk. Of procreators I am Kandarpa, the god of love, and of serpents I am Vasuki, the chief. Of the celestial Naga snakes I am Ananta; of the aquatic deities I am Varuna. Of departed ancestors I am Aryama, and among the dispensers of law I am Yama, lord of death."- Krishna (Bhagavad Gita 10.28-29)
