For Take Your Child to Work Day, I was really focused on making sure my daughter and others actually learned something, but as it turns out and is often the case, I learned some pretty magical lessons from the kids and my colleagues as I watched the girls “report” throughout the newsroom. My daughter Aria and David Gialanella’s wonderful daughter Lena interviewed as many people as they could to help ALM identify employee interests and support needs for interest groups we want to create. I was SO proud of these young ladies and their poise, thoughtfulness in follow up questions and seeing how their confidence grew as they racked up conversations. I’m also blown away by the critical lessons we were reminded of along the way and had to share them here as they apply not only in reporting but in any profession: 1. You need to get people’s attention with respect and clarity of message. We worked on introducing themselves, speaking clearly and kindly but also with a message that is understandable and generates the response they need. 2. Refining your message: maybe people were only suggesting fun things when we asked about “interests” but we know the groups could be support groups as well, so how do we refine the question to get not what we want to hear but get AT what we are trying to learn. 3. Flyfishing: Richard Green taught the girls an important lesson when he mentioned flyfishing. They didn’t know what it was and finally interrupted him and said “what is flyfishing?” If you don’t understand something someone is telling you, say so. It’s OK not to know. It’s not embarrassing. It’s a sign of curiosity and strength to learn and ask more. Always seek to learn and understand. 4. Skydiving: Patrick Smith taught them a valuable lesson when he half-jokingly (I think) mentioned he’d like to skydive with his colleagues. The girls diligently wrote it down but he stopped them to say “if someone says something that surprises you or seems a little strange or different, ask follow up questions, particularly ask why. It will get you more information and a deeper understanding. In Patrick’s case it was for team-building through an emotional experience (again, at least I hope ;) 5. Taking back control: Matt Weiner taught the girls a valuable lesson (purposefully not because he was being evasive) in how you could lose control of a conversation. He started asking them lots of questions to the point he stopped answering theirs. We pointed out how they can politely reorient the conversation to achieve their goal. 6. Working as a team: these girls were naturals and working together, dividing tasks, talking about how to accomplish their task and what they were hearing. My goal was for them to be able to talk to and sincerely relate to others (in my mind one of the most important keys to success), find confidence in their voice and learn to listen and think of where to go next.
