Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Understanding Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatments

It is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the sweat apocrine glands and hair capillaries, usually in areas with a large concentration of apocrine glands, such as the armpits, groin, and buttocks.

The exact cause of hidradenitis is not known, but it is believed to involve a genetic, hormonal and immune system factors.

How does hidradenitis suppurativa occur

In HS, inflammation occurs due to a blockage of the hair follicles or sweat glands, which leads to the accumulation of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. This blockage triggers an immune response, resulting in inflammation, swelling, and the formation of painful, recurrent nodules or abscesses. Over time, these nodules can rupture and form sinus tracts or tunnels beneath the skin's surface.

Who are most susceptible to infection with inflammation of the hidradenitis suppurativa

HS tends to affect more women than men and often starts after puberty. It is more common in individuals with a family history of the condition.

Other factors that may contribute to the development of HS include obesity, smoking, hormonal imbalances, and excessive sweating.

Stages of disease progression and the effect of lack of effective treatment on patients

The disease typically begins with the appearance of small, tender bumps or pimples in the affected areas. These bumps can grow in size and become painful, leading to the formation of deep-seated abscesses.

What are the effects that will result from delaying treatment

If left untreated, the inflammation and subsequent scarring can progress, causing the affected areas to become increasingly painful and disfigured. It can greatly affect a person's quality of life, causing physical discomfort, emotional stress, and restriction of daily activities.

While HS does not directly transform into cancer, it can sometimes be associated with an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. However, this complication is relatively rare.

What should we do to avoid disease

To reduce the risk of developing HS, it is advisable to maintain good hygiene, keep the affected areas clean and dry, wear loose-fitting clothing, and avoid irritants such as excessive sweating, friction, or pressure on the skin.
