10. Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat vs. ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage (WrestleMania III; March 29, 1987)

This was the greatest WWF match of the eighties and to this day is still one of the greatest WrestleMania contests.

The contest came about when Steamboat unsuccessfully challenged Savage for the Intercontinental title in November 1986.

After that match, ‘Macho Man’ continued his assault on ‘The Dragon’ and used a ring bell to injure Steamboat’s larynx.

Ricky returned from injury a few weeks later and their feud culminated in a return title match at the third WrestleMania.

A recorded 93,173 fans witnessed a state-of-the-art, high-octane affair between two of the finest in-ring competitors of the era.

Momentum swung back-and-forth throughout their 14-minute match, with near-falls aplenty.

Towards the end, Savage looked to use the ring bell to attack Steamboat but his ally – George ‘The Animal’ Steele – thwarted the champion’s efforts.

Steamboat used this to his advantage, trapping Savage in a small package to pin the champ and claim the IC belt for the first time.

9. Owen Hart vs. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart (WrestleMania X; March 20, 1994)

Perhaps the finest technical wrestling match in WWF/WWE history, Bret vs. Owen was a wrestling clinic.

The match came about when the brothers Hart had a falling out at Survivor Series 1993.

Initially, Bret refused to wrestle his younger brother but when Owen turned on ‘The Hitman’ in a match for the WWF tag team titles versus The Quebecers at Royal Rumble 1994, all bets were off.

The Calgary natives went toe-to-toe for 20 minutes with a comprehensive exchange of holds and counters.

In the end, Owen pulled off a big upset when he blocked a victory roll attempt to stun Bret for a clean pinfall finish.

That wasn’t the end of Bret’s evening, however; he battled Yokozuna in the main event and reclaimed the WWF Championship for a second time.

Bret and Owen continued their feud after WrestleMania but this was a high-point in both of their careers.

8. The Undertaker vs. Triple H (WrestleMania XXVIII; April 1, 2012)

This bout was a rematch from the prior year’s Mania, when Triple H took on Undertaker to avenge the end of his best friend Shawn Michaels’ career.

Following their battle at WrestleMania 27, ‘The Phenom’ had been sidelined for 10 months and only returned to the WWE at the January 30, 2012 Raw.

Triple H was initially disinterested in battling Taker but following weeks of goading, ‘The Cerebral Assassin’ accepted his adversary’s challenge.

In the rematch, ‘The Deadman’ and ‘The Game’ rumbled in a Hell in a Cell contest with Shawn Michaels assigned as the special guest referee.

The pair pulled out all the stops with an array of huge moves and weapons shots but couldn’t put the other away.

Eventually, Taker triumphed with a second tombstone to extend his streak to 20-0.

Hard-hitting, dramatic and emotional, this was an exhilarating half-hour epic.

7. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 21; April 3, 2005)

Two of the elite wrestlers in the WWE collided in the best match at the 21st Mania.

Tensions between Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels had been simmering since they had come to blows at the Royal Rumble three months earlier.

The match was established as an ‘inter-promotional’ bout with Michaels belonging to the Raw brand and the 1996 Olympian representing Smackdown.

Remarkably, this was also the first ever time the pair had fought in a singles contest.

Despite this, the two superstars meshed seamlessly to assemble a simply breath-taking bout.

Swift moves, transitions and counters lit up the early going before HBK gained control and drove Angle through one of the announcers’ tables.

Kurt mounted a superb comeback, and after some amazing counters, HBK was finally snared in an ankle lock submission to which he submitted.

Angle and Michaels have taken part in many unforgettable matches during their careers, but this bout is amongst the best both legends have ever featured in.

6. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania XXVI; March 28, 2010)

This was a rematch of HBK and Taker’s first WrestleMania encounter from a year earlier- and it was almost as great.

The match came about after Michaels cost Taker the World Heavyweight Championship at the 2010 Elimination Chamber event (which was won by Chris Jericho).

‘The Heartbreak Kid’ was eager to avenge his defeat from the previous year and end The Undertaker’s streak.

‘The Deadman’ agreed to the challenge, but only on one condition - that HBK put his career on the line in a no-disqualification, no-countout stipulation.

The action took place both in and outside the ring, with all of the two legends’ signature moves wheeled out.

After 24 gruelling minutes, a third tombstone from Taker was enough to finish the contest and, with it, the glittering career of Michaels.

5. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin vs. The Rock (WrestleMania X-Seven; April 1, 2001)

The Attitude Era is one of the most beloved periods in the WWE’s history.

No rivalry embodied that time more than ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin vs. The Rock.

Two of the three biggest stars in the history of the WWE, the pair locked horns throughout the period, but their main event clash at the 17th Mania is their most famous.

Just like their main event two years earlier at WrestleMania 15, 'The Rattlesnake' came into the contest as challenger to WWF Champion The Rock.

Before 67,925 fans in a sold out Reliant Astrodome, 'Stone Cold' and Rock crafted a titanic tussle with amazing back-and-forth action.

Towards the end of bout, Austin's nemesis WWE Chairman Vince McMahon arrived at ringside.

To the surprise of fans, he assisted 'Stone Cold' and helped his enemy clinch the WWE Championship.

Austin, to the shock of nearly everyone, had turned heel.

This momentous angle almost overshadowed what was otherwise a frankly sensational scrap.

For many fans, this match represented the high point of the Attitude Era.

Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon put on an innovative classic at WrestleMania 10 (

4. Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania X; March 20, 1994)

Shawn Michaels’ first classic WrestleMania outing was this ladder match with Razor Ramon.

The rivalry commenced in November 1993 when HBK returned from a short hiatus after being stripped of his Intercontinental title - and Ramon captured the belt after defeating Rick Martel on September 27, 1993.

Over the subsequent months, Michaels goaded ‘The Bad Guy’ before Ramon agreed to a ladder match that was set for the 10th WrestleMania in Madison Square Garden.

The backstage friends fought a simply sensational contest, with HBK taking some incredible bumps off the ladder.

The finish came when Michaels looked all set to reclaim the IC belt from above the ring, when Razor hurled him away.

Michaels became tangled in the ropes which presented Razor with the opportunity to retrieve his title and thereby retain the belt.

Vince McMahon on commentary called the match ‘unbelievable’. He wasn’t wrong.

3. Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boys vs. The Hardy Boys (WrestleMania X-Seven; April 1, 2001)

The only non-singles bout to make the list was a Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) match - and it was incredible.

The three teams had collided in the WWE’s first ever TLC match at SummerSlam 2000 when Edge and Christian retained their WWF tag team titles in another stunning outing.

Dubbed ‘TLC II’, the remake was better than the first.

All six superstars pulled out even more death-defying moves and bumps to entertain the Houston crowd and millions watching on television.

The match saw outside interference with Spike Dudley meddling on behalf of his storyline siblings, Rhyno intervening on behalf of his compatriots Edge and Christian, and Lita evening up the numbers for Matt and Jeff.

Despite the interference, the match was a spectacular stunt-show, which featured some of the most audacious spots ever seen in the company.

In the end, Edge and Christian managed to retain their titles, but fans were the real winners.

2. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart vs. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin (WrestleMania 13; March 23, 1997)

The match that made Steve Austin a pro wrestling megastar.

The bout – a submission match refereed by MMA superstar Ken Shamrock – was a rematch of a classic contest between Hart and Austin from Survivor Series 1996.

Austin came into the bout as a heel, whereas Bret was a beloved babyface and the company’s top star.

The pair fought as intense a contest as fans had ever witnessed in WrestleMania history, brawling all around the Rosemont Horizon.

A frustrated Hart, growing desperate for the win, turned to heel tactics to secure victory.

This began to turn the crowd against ‘The Hitman’ and increasingly in favour of ‘Stone Cold’.

The seminal moment in the match came when Austin, who by this point was a bloody mess, was trapped in Hart’s signature Sharpshooter manoeuvre.

Austin battled valiantly, with blood pouring down his face, to escape the submission for several minutes until he passed out to hand victory to ‘The Hitman’.

Though he lost the match, Austin walked away a winner.

This match was a key factor in the ‘Stone Cold’ character becoming one of the all-time fan favourites, and Austin’s never-say-die attitude exhibited in this bout became the stuff of legend.

1. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania XXV; April 5, 2009)

This match pitted Mr. WrestleMania vs. ‘The Phenom’ at WWE’s biggest show for the first time - and it was the best match in Mania history.

The contest didn’t have a particularly strong storyline to build up the contest, other than two of the company’s most legendary performers wishing to out-perform their illustrious counterpart.

Once the match arrived, however, the two greats pulled out all the stops in an incredible half-hour war.

The Undertaker employed the Hell’s Gate submission, chokeslam, Last Ride and even his Tombstone piledriver, but couldn’t defeat HBK.

Michaels, meanwhile, hit his signature Sweet Chin Music move on two occasions for desperately close and dramatic near-falls.

Eventually, The Undertaker extended his streak to 17-0 after finally putting his greatest opponent away with a second tombstone.

An all-time classic that will live long in the memory, this was a fitting highlight to a show that celebrated 25 years of WrestleMania.
