If a single snowflake is seen falling at a Met Office weather station on December 25 the government forecasting service declares a white Christmas. This used to be the Met Office building in London, but they have since expanded the list to include Buckingham Palace, Aldergrove Airport in Belfast, Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen, Edinburgh Castle, Coronation Street in Manchester, and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Now the Met Office has moved its HQ to Exeter, this puts the onus on the snowflake to land on King Charles' gaff on The Mall. After the capital was blasted by an arctic freeze last week, the last few days has seen the mercury do a U-turn with temperatures rising from sub zero to the teens. It's not exactly been warm, but it's hard to imagine snow falling on Sunday.

Rather than rely on the unscientific feelings of a MyLondon reporter, we've instead decided to compile the predictions of five top weather services to answer the question on all our frost bitten lips: "Will it be a white Christmas?".

BBC Weather

The UK's most pessimistic weather service says Christmas day is going to be a miserable one. Expect clouds all day, a 20% chance of rain, and highs of 11C. In the UK the heaviest snow tends to fall when the temperature is between 0 and 2C, but it can also form below zero. With the mercury only bottoming out at 9C, things don't look good in the world of BBC.

Met Office

The UK's most reliable weather service agrees with the Beeb, but does give a bit a bit more hope in terms of temperatures. Boffins at the Met Office think temperatures could go as low as 6C on Christmas Day evening. With a 20% chance of rain, that's moisture in the air and only 4C off snow temperatures.

AccuWeather

This is the weather service all the cool kids use, and there's a good reason. AccuWeather has a feature called Wintercast when things get snowy, and there's a hurricane tracker so you can watch storms as they rampage across the planet. This Christmas the app is giving a slightly higher chance of precipitation than the first two services at 25%. No sign of snow though.

The Weather Channel

American website The Weather Channel seems to have the most barmy prediction of the lot. Though it can agree on a nippy 11C, the rain forecast puts getting wet at a whopping 64%. Basically it's more likely than London is due a soaking on Christmas day. That rises to 78% in the evening. If temperatures were to inexplicably drop, it could become snow.

Ventusky

This is the app even the cool kids haven't heard of. Like all the other forecasts, Ventusky says London is due around 10C and doesn't seem to have a word on rain. You can see where wind is flowing from, in this case the warmer airs of the Atlantic Ocean. The coolest part is the live webcams which lets you see the weather in Barking in East London.

So will it be a white Christmas?

Another blanket of snow on Christmas day would bring a smile to everyone in London

Having considered the forecasts MyLondon wouldn't put money on it being a white Christmas in London. For the gamblers amongst you, William Hill currently have snow in the capital on December 25 as 4/1. If like Bing Crosby you are still dreaming of a white Christmas, find a way to get to Edinburgh where bookies have put it as the favourite UK city at 4/7 for the white stuff.
