Thanks to director Zak Hilditch's patient storytelling and strong work from lead Thomas Jane, 1922 ranks among the more satisfying Stephen King adaptations.

Jelisije J You ever see a movie where you know what is going to happen scene by scene and you never watch the film before? That is what I felt with this movie. Its not a bad watch but its not an interesting one. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Alec C What would you do if you had to keep hold of the land you had?! A farmer learns that his wife has decided to move the family and leave the farm behind, which leads him to conspire with his son to kill her, leaving to devastating consequences for the remaining family. A disturbing story of betrayal, love and murder makes this Stephen King story an intense viewing from start to finish! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Tyler B This phone pulls it off! A slow burn where man's ego and regret get the better of him. Who would of thought that farm life could be so dark. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Olson K Watched in January 2024 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Brian G 1 hour and 42 mins of my life I can't get back. Thomas Jane' acting performance was the only positive of this story that could be told in 60 seconds. Dragged out depressing drivel. Not everything written by a famous writer should be adapted into a movie Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review Jeff M This is one of the more unusual Stephen King movie adaptations, but I think it might be one of my favorites. It's based on a novella published in his collection "Full Dark, No Stars". What makes it unusual is that the horror and supernatural elements of the story are the least interesting thing here and, with a little tweaking, could have been excised entirely. Instead, I was drawn in by the power and eventual heartbreak of the story itself and the destruction that falls upon Jane's Wilfred James. The horror aspects almost seem like an afterthought here. I suppose this is more akin to something like DOLORES CLAIBORNE, a woefully underrated King adaptation, than anything else I can think of in his ouvre. Jane is not an actor with whom I'm overly familiar, but he carries the film beautifully, and he succeeds in making us care about him even when his actions are reprehensible. This is certainly one of the more dramatically impactful King adaptations, and while not on the level of something like CARRIE, it's definitely a winner. (WARNING: if you hate rats as much as I do, be aware... they are PLENTIFUL in this movie, so much so that I had to pause it a couple times to gather my bearing.) Rebecca Hawkes Daily Telegraph (UK) In cinemas, it might have been overshadowed by flashier rivals, but perhaps, on demand, this slow, but winningly bleak little tale will find the audience it deserves. Rated: 4/5 Aug 26, 2019 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com [1922] is a credible addition to a filmography where practically every thought the writer commits to paper is, seemingly, deemed fit for the screen. Oct 20, 2017 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com The familiar case of a short story stretched too thin in a feature film. Rated: 2/4 Oct 20, 2017 Full Review John Campea The John Campea Show The performances are great from top-to-bottom...this was a movie that probably should have been on the big screen. Mar 24, 2023 Full Review Zach Dionne Decider 1922 is a new type of Stephen King movie, executed with as much artistic inventiveness as passionate faithfulness. Mar 10, 2023 Full Review Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut 1922 is an effective, chilling bit of work that boasts a revelatory lead performance and a compelling, gradual erosion of a man's psyche.
