Until recently, wigs were pretty much the preserve of judges, drag queens, ageing actresses and balding men.

But, according to an article in The Sun newspaper, wigs are back in fashion once more.

Lots of female celebs including Lily Allen and Paris Hilton have been sporting dramatic hairpieces. Last month, internet auction website eBay reported a 44% increase in wig sales.

And many stores reported wigs were surprise Christmas
best-sellers.

Top hair stylist Richard Ward believes the credit crunch may also have contributed to the popularity of the wig, saying: "A few years ago hair extensions took off as a massive trend. But they cost about €700 to put in and are very high maintenance.

"Also, once you have them done you are stuck with them. But people have realised you can pick up wig for as little as €50, keep it in a drawer and just get it out when you feel like it."

Pixie Geldof said: "I love wigs. They're fun - you can be whoever you want for the night and wake up again as yourself. My fave is my Britney meltdown pink bob."

So could the wig be back to stay? Well, if you are thinking of investing in one do it soon - because in the fickle world of fashion the fad could very easily be hair today and gone tomorrow.
