(October 28, 2010) Vera Zvonareva continues her surge toward the WTA Championships semifinals and continues to shadow World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the desert. Wozniacki can wrap up the year-end top spot by beating French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in her final round-robin match of the Maroon Group.
Zvonareva, who still has an outside shot to surpass Wozniacki as the year-end No. 1, defeated Moscow champion Victoria Azarenka, 7-6(4), 6-4 on Wednesday. Zvonareva is 2-0 in the White Group.
Facing a 2-4 first-set deficit and a 1-3 hole in the second set, Zvonareva fought back to keep her perfect record in round-robin play intact.
"I'm always leaving 100% on the court when I'm out there," Zvonareva said. "I'm happy I was able to come back in those two sets; I shouldn't have started that slowly, but I was just trying to find my rhythm. I made the right adjustments and came up with great tennis in the tie-break when I needed it."
