Ángel Nieto joins World GP Bike Legends

1 Mins read

Spanish motorcycle racing hero, Ángel Nieto, is the latest rider to announce his participation in the inaugural World GP Bike Legends event at Jerez.

Nieto is the third most successful Grand Prix rider of all-time having won 90 grand prix throughout his career, a statistic which can only beaten by Valentino Rossi and Giacomo Agostini.

Nieto won 13 championships during his racing career although he prefers to label that achievement as 12+1 championships, rather than mentioning the superstitious number 13.

The 68-year-old was most-known for his success in the 50cc class, which he won on six occasions, and the 125cc class, which he won seven times, including four years on the bounce between 1981-1984.

The popular rider will have a huge following of Spanish fans at Jerez and it is something he is looking forward to.

He said: “It seems like an incredible idea! Bringing so many champions together from all over the world is a very difficult task, and World GP Bike Legends is the first event ever to manage it.

“No true fan can miss this event. Nothing else in the whole world will be like this – it will be phenomenal. I’m going with the hope of a reunion with lots of old friends, some of whom I’ve not seen for a long time. Its going to be a big party.”

Nieto joins a growing list of legends that have signed-up for the event, which takes place between June 19-21, including Loris Capirossi, Juan Garriga, Kevin Schwantz and Steve Parrish.

Alongside the main event, which is being labelled as the Race of Legends, the International Classic Grand Prix will also be taking place as one of the support races.

Away from the track there will also be live music from Bonnie Tyler and former Moto GP rider and World Superbike Champion, James Toseland.
