Moto GP legend Angel Nieto in serious condition in hospital after being involved in horror quad bike accident

Spanish 13-time world champion involved in smash in Ibiza and being treated for head injuries in hospital

MOTO GP legend Angel Nieto has been seriously injured after he was involved in a road accident in Ibiza.

Nieto is regarded as one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time after a brilliant career that saw him lift 13 world titles.

But the 70-year-old is in intensive care in hospitable after being caught up in a horror smash while out riding a quad bike.

It is understood he was hit from behind by a car being driven by a tourist on the Spanish holiday isle.

Nieta was rushed to hospital with what medics have described as 'serious head injuries' after being launched from his quad.

Reports in Spain say the national hero underwent a two-hour operation and is currently now in a serious but stable condition.

Doctors are hopeful the injuries he suffered a not life threatening, and the family have asked for time for him to recover in hospital.

Nieto is one of the most successful professional riders of all time, having won a total of 90 Grand Prix races during a career spanning 22 years.

Despite never winning a world title on a 500cc, he has always been regarded by his peers as one of the most talented people to have graced the sport.

He won six world titles at 50cc, with a further seven coming in the 125cc class - including four successive championships between 1981-1984.

Only two riders have won more Grand Prix than Nieto - Giacoma Agostini who leads the way on 122 and Valentino Rossi with 115.
