The 7 Winter Fashion Buys That Come Street Style-Approved

The 7 Winter Fashion Moments That Come Street StyleApproved

Welcome to Shop The Season, Vogue’s bi-annual online shopping event that sees our editors handpick the best the new season has to offer. From the best coats and tried-and-tested trousers, to the street style trends worth your attention, you can find everything you need for the perfect autumn capsule wardrobe.

It’s hard to imagine a time when street style wasn’t an integral part of the fashion sphere. While “street fashion” as a concept has roots stretching back to the youth culture boom of the ’60s, it wasn’t until the mid-Noughties that the candid, pavement-pounding shots that we know and love today emerged, with the work of photographers such as Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist, and Tommy Ton.

Fast-forward to 2023, and the street style scene shows no sign of waning, yet post-pandemic we have definitely seen a subtle quietening of the looks that grace the lens. Of course, there will always be a certain amount of peacocking outside the fashion week shows, but the sartorial steer for 2023 seems to be staples over look-at-me statements and versatility over the avant garde. While you could attribute this to the cost of living crisis or three years of on-and-off lockdowns, you need to just look at the fashion week catwalks to see that basics are big news right now: from Gucci’s white-shirt-and-baggy-jeans moment to Miu Miu’s souped-up hoodies. It essentially provides an endless source of practical inspiration for stylish, everyday dressing.

If you spend enough time trawling through the latest street style shots, you will start to notice certain themes emerging, and when grouped together, they form a readymade line-up of pieces that come road-tested and pre-approved by the pros. So, for autumn/winter 2023, we decided to create a definitive edit of the cold-weather buys, styling moments and silhouettes that the fashion crowd are backing right now.

Many of these pieces will, most likely, already be sitting in your wardrobe: think boxy blazers, white shirts and anything grey, but the secret to dressing success lies in styling – the subtle tweaks show-goers use to make old favourites feel fresh.

The chances are you will already have a blazer sitting in your wardrobe, but what’s the secret to making it looking new season-ready? Try throwing together with a white tank top and baggy jeans a la Gucci, or pairing with a colour-match skirt in the style of Prada.

Everyone’s favourite Noughties shoe staple is back, and we lost count of the number of ballet pumps we saw outside the shows. We love how Alexa has styled hers with socks for a preppy spin, while Vogue’s Gabriella Karefa-Johnson used hers to ground her Chopova Lowena miniskirt.

Do you get more classic than a white shirt? We think not. We recommend borrowing from the boys (quite literally) and opt for a looser fit, either worn open with tailored trousers or tucked in to everything from midi-skirts to tailored shorts.

The pop-of-red

Red has been having a moment for a few seasons now, however show-goers seemed to be favouring a particular “pop-of-colour” styling hack this autumn, whether it’s a bright ballet pump, a knotted crimson cardigan or a vibrant bag.

Thanks to the steely stylings of Prada, Miu Miu and Fendi, grey is another hue that has risen up the ranks this season. Born to be worn head-to-toe, take your cues from Tamu McPherson and opt for a midi-skirt and tailored coat, both in matching shades of pewter.

For the more statement-making among us, we recommend embracing the sporty logo look, as seen on Vogue US team members, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and Chioma Nnadi. Conner Ives’s upcycled jersey designs are a no-brainer for this trend, as are Martine Rose’s autumn/winter 2023 football jersey-inspired tops. There are also plenty of secondhand iterations to be found online from the likes of Rokit and Etsy.

No longer the reserve of weekend casual, denim has been given the souped-up treatment this season. This is by no means a one-size-fits-all look, and it can manifest in everything from printed jeans and patchwork shirts to sculptural denim jackets, a la Alexander McQueen.
