Casey Spooner always takes Fashion Week in stride. The sheer Acne Studios shirt he wore to the New York shows a year ago ushered in his new personal philosophy behind sheer dressing, one that he further fleshed out, so to speak, with the lacy white dress that he wore to the Palomo Spain show last summer. At Fendi’s Fall 2019 show at Milan Fashion Week men’s the other day, he just about caused a scene with another wildly unexpected look.

If the combination of shorts, a black turtleneck, and a shearling coat wasn’t bold enough, Spooner topped everything off with one of Fendi’s umbrella-hat hybrids, which the house debuted at its airport-themed Fall 2018 men’s show. The multipurpose creation is a cheeky reference to the brand’s roots: The mood board for the collection included a photograph from 1925 of the Italian family’s first store, wherein they sold “luggage, trunks, umbrellas,” as displayed on the signage outside.

Despite the fact that it was a perfectly sunny day, Spooner decided to wear the umbrella hat to the show. “I loved it the minute I saw it during my fitting,” Spooner told Vogue over email. “The umbrella hat made it easy for my friends to find me in the throngs!” Aside from visibility, though, it became an object of fascination for the young kids who crowded outside the show. “They loved the look,” Spooner said of the young onlookers. “I walked out front to find a friend and several hundred kids started screaming! It was amazing. I got them to all yell Fendi!” So if you’re unsure what young kids are into these days, it’s apparently umbrella hats. See for yourself, below.
