message from
HeadofSchool
Fostering a healthy,
active way of life
As we come to the end of our first successful
term of team sports this year, I am
reminded of how important sports activity
is in nurturing the full potential of our students.
While I am delighted that our teams did so well
this fall, I believe there is an even more important
message about involvement in Athletics.
Promoting and supporting a healthy active lifestyle is a priority we take
very seriously. Our athletic mission is based on encouraging health and
physical fitness through teamwork, competing fairly, commitment, and the
respectful treatment of others. Taking part in team sports also teaches
our students to be effective communicators and competitors. Our Gryphons
learn co-operation, problem solving, how to employ creativity, how to manage
relationships, and the art of perseverance with every practice and game.
I believe it is our responsibility to give students the necessary experience
and confidence to pursue sports and physical activity as part of their
lifestyle. Our mandate for healthy active living consists of a regular and
continuous review of nutrition, and opportunities for physical activity,
that not only include team sports, but swimming, skating and skiing.
Our physical education classes also provide an environment in which
students learn and practise developmentally-appropriate gross motor skills.
Furthermore, students have the opportunity for physical activity on all days
of the week through their classes, House Leagues, team sports, playground
activities, and fitness clubs.
It comes as no surprise that research indicates that physical activity
and nutrition have an enhancing effect on the academic achievements
of students. Participation in team sports also provides students with
transferable skills, such as listening, communication, co-operation and
problem solving. Outside of this, being part of a team has a unifying
effect, and students understand that hard work and practice culminates
in collective achievement. I believe that participation in team sports also
enables students to discover things within themselves like compassion,
empathy, kindness, responsibility for others and leads them to the revelation
that real effort leads to personal best.
Admissions 2016-2017
New Admissions
Applications are now being received for
the 2016 to 2017 academic year and
should be submitted by the end of December
2015. If you are planning to submit an
application for a sibling not presently attending
Bayview Glen, please contact Judy Maxwell
at jmaxwell@bayviewglen.ca, for an
application form. Knowing your intentions now
will help us plan for next year. Where space
permits, we will try and give priority to siblings.
We appreciate you sharing the names of
families who may be interested in a Bayview
Glen education for their sons or daughters.
Our next Open House is on Saturday,
November 28, 2015 between 9:00 a.m. and
11:00 a.m. We look forward to meeting your
friends or colleagues who may be interested
in attending.
Preschool and Grade five are entry years
at Bayview Glen. Space in other years may be
limited, and rely on attrition.
Re-enrollment
Watch for re-enrollment forms to be
mailed out on January 4, 2016. The
re-enrollment deadline for returning students
is February 29. Families will have the option to
pay fees in full by February 1 to receive a
3% discount.
For an application form, please contact
Judy Maxwell, Director of Admissions
at jmaxwell@bayviewglen.ca
Bayview Glen has launched its first iteration
of the Design Club, with Laura Gleeson
and Anthony Chuter as facilitators. The purpose
of the Design Club is to provide students with a
creative and entrepreneurial hub that cultivates
creative and critical thinking, collaboration,
communication and design thinking. Successful
applicants will have the space, equipment and
support to generate ideas, test them, and bring
them to reality.
The club will explore themes throughout the
year: city-scaping, fast & far flight, wearable
technology, and more. While exploring these
themes, students will build their design skills
and mindsets in these three areas:
1. Design Thinking: Projects that cultivate
Idea Generation (Design Thinking),
2. Rapid Prototyping: The use of Design
Tools such 3D printing, laser cutter, arduino
boards, soldering circuitry, and
3. Entrepreneurial Mindset: Providing
mentoring and support to succeed in
entrepreneurial experiences both within
and outside of the academic realm.
The application process was well received;
we had over 80 applicants from the Prep and
Upper Schools. Due to space, safety and
supervision needs, we could only take 30 in
total from grades 7 to 12. Stay tuned for our
next update!
from your Board of Directors
BVG’s Board of Directors:
Fresh Eyes
Energy – a sea of happy,
child energy. I wish I
could bottle it! It was
a blistering warm afternoon
in August when I arrived to
visit Bayview Glen Camp as
the incoming Camp Liaison
Director. Inheriting this position
from Caroline Zarnett, whose
brilliant leadership and guidance
supported this camp through the
past decade, I happily stepped into
the role with a smile on my face
and fresh eyes.
With no prior experience
concerning this camp, I had
prepared myself by previewing
several videos depicting the
weekly activities. They painted
a picture of a busy summer
explosion of Bayview Glen fun
and learning. There was so much
positive energy, I could hardly
contain my own smile.
I was met on that day by our
Camp Director, Dara Kahane,
who took me on a whirlwind tour
around the various activities.
It is hard to imagine a person
of higher skill and passion
for her job than Dara. With a
Bluetooth link connecting her
to all things camp, Dara took
me on a journey through the
magically reconfigured spaces
of the Bayview Glen property.
The transformation from school
space to camp is dramatic and
hard to describe: the junior
school classrooms become
cabins; the main floor offices
become makeshift ‘ops room
headquarters’, a busy hub of staff
coordination; another office down
the main corridor has become the
first aid station, complete with
dedicated nursing staff, cots and
band-aids, ready for any call; the
‘great outdoors’ beckon throughout
the ravine; and the pools are
filled with excited children of all
sizes, surrounded by a protective
perimeter of highly trained
swimming staff.
And speaking of staffers, the
camp has the added advantage
of offering a great employment
opportunity for students and
faculty. Changing from school
mode to camp mode, these
familiar faces make Bayview Glen
a year-round home.
More than 1000 campers flow
through each of the summer weeks
of programming and activities,
in ten age-specific units. There
is a precision to the comings
and goings of each group as they
circulate from activity to activity
in military fashion. Overnights,
arts, sports, drama and nature
all play their part in the Bayview
Glen experience. As well, the
Sunshine Program supports
campers with special needs.
Together with her senior team
of highly skilled administrators,
Dara knows almost every face
we pass on our tour and offers a
confidence-building comment in
her wake.
There is no doubt that this
camp is creating unforgettable
summer memories and has done
so since 1962. Bayview Glen can
be justly proud of offering families
a fantastic experience to build
friendships, learn new skills and
fill the summer days with smiles.
In my first year on this Board,
I have observed that this is a
cohesive, forward-thinking group
of dedicated individuals. This
is a Board that is cautious to
honour and learn from the past
and equally visionary to look
to the future. One of the most
rewarding aspects of being part
of a forward-thinking Board is
taking something that is working
well and challenging ourselves
to look for ways to make it even
better. This progressive thinking,
that has led your Board to putting
the finishing touches on a new
Strategic Plan for the School this
fall, will now be applied as we
turn our attention to the camp.
With those same fresh eyes, we
will take an in-depth look at how
camp is run and set about to
create a course for future growth.
The success of this plan
depends on many factors, but
most importantly it depends on
your valued input. In the coming
weeks we will begin the process to
examine the camp from all angles.
We will look at all aspects of the
operations and set up focus groups
with staff, families, campers,
providers and partners as we
explore the past, present and
exciting future of this summer
oasis in the city. If you are part of
our camp story, let us know your
thoughts.
A visionary strategic plan for
the Bayview Glen Camp is on the
horizon, one that will guide us to
even more summer smiles. You
only have fresh eyes for a brief
moment in time. I plan to make
the most of it!
International Conference in Singapore
In October, seven students travelled
to United World College of Southeast
Asia to attend the 2015 International
Conference. Prior to our arrival at the
campus, we spent five days in China
on a guided tour. During three days in
Beijing, we visited the Forbidden City,
hiked the Great Wall, walked through
Tian'anmen Square, explored Ming
Tombs, and strolled through the grounds
of the Summer Palace. After our tour in
Beijing, we hopped on the bullet train
and travelled at speeds of up to 300
km/hour to the city of Xi'an. Near the
unexcavated tomb of the first emperor
of China, we visited the archaeological
find of the century, an entire army of
life-size terra cotta soldiers and horses,
interred in underground corridors for
more than 2,000 years.
Upon our arrival in steamy, hazy
Singapore, we were warmly welcomed
by our host families. The next few days
were filled with workshops on bringing
sustainability into our communities,
listening to inspiring keynote speakers
and volunteering at a variety of service
initiatives organized by the school.
We also enjoyed exploring Chinatown
and Little India using the public transit
system. There were over 500 delegates
from Round Square schools from all
over the world resulting in a very
international conference indeed.
in submitting an application.
Ecuador
Our students will volunteer in the community
of Pulinqui and work with an indigenous
group near Otavalo in northern Ecuador.
Projects may include developing sustainable
recycling initiatives, painting a local school
and reforestation in the area. Students will be
home stayed with local families during their
time in Otavalo.
and service work will be
improving conditions at the
local school. The group will
also visit the Sacred Valley of
the Incas, Cusco and spend
four days hiking the Inca Trail.
Please note the hike is quite
challenging due to the rugged
Host Family Needed
for Gap Student
We have a female Gap student from
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School
in Western Australia joining us as a
classroom assistant in the Lower
School from January – June, 2016. We
require a host family to provide room
and board for her for the duration of
her time with us. In the past, our host
families typically live fairly close to the
school, have a spare bedroom, and have
younger children at home. If you think
you might be interested in exploring this
opportunity please contact Mrs. Brown.
Bayview
Glen hosts
provincial
meeting of
independent
librarians
On Friday October 2, Bayview
Glen welcomed 29 librarians
from CIS schools across the province
for their Fall meeting. Samhita Gupta
(Lower School Librarian) and Ellen
Buckley (Moatfield Campus Librarian)
arranged for a full day of professional
development activities, including book
talks, research skills program planning
and a visit from a local educational
products company, which brought the
“empathy toy” for the teacher-librarians
to work with. Everyone was extremely
impressed with our new Learning
Commons and the Moatfield Campus.
Prep School. This is a new role in the
student council, and a new committee
that I created with Ms. Astrella. The
Ambassadors’ Association embraces
our Core Values (Balance, Integrity,
Respect, Responsibility, Compassion),
and uses them to inspire leadership
in the Prep. The group was formed
to assist with all public events at the
Prep, such as Open Houses, tours,
Orientation, and with new family
welcome. The Head Ambassador must
be in Grade 8, but all Prep School
students are welcome to join. As the proud leader of this
wonderful team, I try to encourage not just them, but
everyone, to get involved in getting involved at Bayview Glen.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
for parents of students in BG2 to Grade 5
Wednesday, November 18, 2015
and Thursday, November 19, 2015
from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
in the classrooms and specialist locations
Parent-teacher conferences are
a great opportunity to meet and
discuss issues and progress with
your child’s teacher. This is an
evening for parents and teachers
only. Should it be absolutely
necessary to bring your child,
he/she must remain with you at all
times since all staff will be busy.
Each homeroom teacher
conference is 15 minutes long and
we appreciate punctuality both
on arrival and departure. Parents
may also request to meet with a
specialist teacher. Each specialist
conference is 10 minutes long.
Specialist teachers will post a
schedule outside their classroom
door so that they can see everyone
in a timely and fair manner. In
order to maintain our schedule, it
is important that the parent and
teacher be aware of the time, and
if necessary, a continuation of the
conference at another time may be
requested. Should you arrive late
to a conference, the teacher will
try to reschedule your conference
during the evening or at another
convenient time.
After School Programme Pass
Each family involved in the After School Programme has been issued a pass.
This pass must be shown to the Receptionist when you enter the building.
If you lose or forget your pass, you must sign in at reception and be identified.
The ‘pass’ system is an effective safety tool that helps to control who has access
close up
Both campuses were
buzzing in early October as a
photography crew was spotted
in classrooms and hallways
across the school.
Bayview Glen is working
with the firm Crane
MetaMarketing to launch a new
brand for the school. Capturing
a gallery of new images was the
goal of the three-day intense
shoot. Along with a creative
designer, the Bayview Glen
communications team co-ordinated
an elaborate and exciting range
of photographs starring teachers
and students. Award-winning
and local photographer Matthew
Plexman was the man behind the
lens. The photo crew said they
were incredibly impressed with
the overwhelming co-operation
and enthusiasm from everyone
involved. The gallery of photos will
be available later this fall.
Hello! Vettese and
Division. We are the co-heads of
the new Chess Club. We helped to
create the club because we both
enjoy the game of chess, especially
playing casually. This club is not
about competition. It’s about having
fun and learning cool new tips
about chess. All levels of players,
from beginners to advanced, are
welcome. New strategies and
clocks will be introduced, as well
as different kinds of games, such
as double or giveaway chess. All
games are optional, and you can
The summer of 2015 was a
tremendous success. Our team has
already been busy preparing for what
is yet to be another memorable summer
for our campers and staff. We have
been overwhelmed with inquiries about
‘Summer 2016’ and all indications are
that we will have another season of
full enrollment.
We would love to have the privilege
of spending the summer with your child
with or without a clock. Sometimes,
we even talk about famous games
and players, or have short lessons
that include playing tips.
The Chess Club is organized
by Mr. Milligan and you can find
us in P6C every Tuesday from
3:30-4:45 p.m.. We also have a
parent volunteer, Mr. Sugolov,
who helps out.
Our club is very flexible, so if
you have sports one week and
can’t make it, we’ll understand.
If you want to learn to play, are
interested in brushing up on your
skills, or just want to come out
and beat Mr. Milligan, join the
Parent-Teacher Conferences
for parents of students in grades 6 to 8
Tuesday, November 24, 2015
and Wednesday, November 25, 2015
from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the classrooms and specialist locations
Parent-teacher conferences
provide a great opportunity to
meet and discuss specifics and
progress with your child’s teacher.
During this time, parents and
teachers can discuss student
learning, both in and out of the
classroom. Such meetings can
provide clarity of your child’s
strengths and areas for growth,
and how best to support them in
their endeavours.
Each homeroom teacher or
subject teacher conference is 10
minutes long, and we appreciate
punctuality both on arrival and
departure. In order to maintain
our schedule, it is important that
the parent and teacher be aware of
the time during a conference, and
if necessary, a continuation of the
meeting at another time may be
requested. Should you arrive late
to a conference, the teacher will
try to reschedule you during the
evening or at another convenient
time. Conference times will be
sent home with your child.
Feed The Hungry
Michael Bellissimo US Head of Arts
Feed The Hungry has been around for
24 years, 18 of which I have been involved.
This “project” was started by two teachers as
an initiative to meet the needs of a struggling
downtown homeless population. One day I
decided to help out a former principal, as a
'one-time' favour. After that I felt compelled to
continue. Like numerous 'first-timers', I was
shocked that there were so many who needed
help in a city as wealthy as Toronto. Eleven years
ago I approached Mrs. Daunt about getting our
school involved. She thought it would be a great
initiative for the Upper School to undertake, and
we all jumped right in.
Feed the Hungry is a charitable group that
operates every Saturday and runs 52 Saturdays
a years, including all holidays. Supported by
private donations, and civvies days like we have
at Bayview Glen. Donations are for all the food
and supplies for the breakfast as well as some
maintenance, no persons are paid.
Over the years we've had many items donated
to us. Most recently our dilapidated kitchen was
renovated by some very kind-hearted people. It
seems that whenever we are in need, someone
comes to the rescue. People are good.
When I first started 18 years ago we would
serve around 40 - 50 people on a Saturday, now
we are serving over 110. It’s not because our
coffee is great, rather there are more people in
need, more homeless, more who are just making
the rent, more who are mentally ill, more who are
lost and just need a place where they can sit and
have a meal without being hassled.
The first time I brought Bayview Glen students
to the program most were shocked, like I
how this could be happening. I was not sure if
anyone would sign up a second time, but when
the list went up it was filled with 12 names (the
I ask students why they sign up they tell me
Harrison Lenz, Bardia Monavari etc…still show
up when they are in town. Some of our students
will even attend over the summer, and never
collect the hours. You can’t imagine the feeling
as a teacher when I see students from my school
willingly wash dishes by hand, scrape eggs off
plates, slice loaves of bread, mop floors, or have
a conversation with someone needing an ear,
and do it all with a smile. Or when I see the look
on a parents face who decided to stay and help
as they look on with pride at their child serving
the less fortunate. Simply wonderful!
Terry Fox Run and
Prep Spirit Day
Hi
We are Amman and Isabella, your Male
and Female Heads of Athletics. The
Terry Fox Run and Prep Spirit Day took place
on Monday, September 28. The events for
the day were planned by the Athletic Council.
Our council is comprised of our four Heads
of Houses and 1 Assistant Head; Phoebe
Slovenski (Laurier), George Gialelis (Trudeau),
Emily Wong (Macdonald), and Emma Hubble
and Ava Basti (Mackenzie). Our council would
not be complete without our two fantastic
Assistant Heads of Athletics, Ryan Freeman
and Alyana Nurani. Since the beginning of the
school year, our council has been working
extremely hard to make Spirit Day and the
Terry Fox Run the best this school has ever
seen. On the day of, everybody dressed up in
their House colours (blue for Mackenzie, red
for Laurier, green for Macdonald, and purple
for Trudeau) and the spirit was infectious. The
afternoon began with the Terry Fox Run where
students and teachers participated in a 2km
run along the Betty Sutherland Trail. Following
the run, everyone headed to the turf for our
Spirit Day activities. Students had a blast
participating in the various activities: Tug of
War, Multi-Sport Relay, Water Balloon Catch,
Musical Chairs, Block and Bucket Relay and
Everybody's It Tag. Throughout the afternoon
each House cheered eagerly and accessorized
in House colours to vie for the extra points
that would be rewarded to the most spirited
House. In the end, Macdonald was awarded the
most spirited. It was an intense afternoon and
the four Houses fought hard to accumulate the
most House points. Congratulations to Laurier
for being the overall winner for the afternoon.
We wish to thank Ms. Hillis and the rest of the
teaching staff for all their assistance in making
our Terry Fox Run and Spirit Day such a great
event. This was the first of many successful
future events we hope to plan. Our next big
project is getting House Leagues underway,
which we expect to start very soon.
Community
Outreach
We are Stephanie Porfiris and
Gideon Beck. Last year, we
brought community service to
the Prep School for the first time.
We decided we wanted to create a
committee to give back to the world
that has given us so much. Last
year, we involved our school in the
'Walk Now for Autism' fundraiser
and raised over $1400.00. We also
got the Prep School more involved
with 'Nicola's Triathlon', which is a
fundraiser to raise money for MFM
Disease research. It took place right
here at Bayview Glen. We just began
our fundraising for the Terry Fox
Foundation and participated in the
run on Monday, September 28. We
hope every Prep School student will
donate at least $1.00 to the Terry Fox
Foundation to make this year's run
more memorable than ever. This cause
is very important to both of us because
we both have had someone close to us
die of cancer. We hope that this year's
donations will really make a change
After donations cease, we will switch
all of our attention to Movember, a
month dedicated to raising money
to prevent men's prostate cancer.
Eventually, our committee will visit
and help out at places like retirement
homes, homeless shelters, and soup
kitchens. If you have any questions
about Community Outreach, please
seek us out. We will do our best to help.
Sincerely,
Stephanie PorFIris and Gideon Beck
Spirit Day and
Terry Fox Run
Spirit Day 2015 is a day for the school to come together and enjoy a
competitive and fun afternoon down on the turf. Organizing all the
activities and events during this day required lots of planning from the
Athletic Council. Guided by previous successful spirit days, we were able
to create an efficient and well-run afternoon down on the turf, full of
cheering and school spirit. The Terry Fox run that took place before Spirit
week was a great way to see students get outside and active when they
would usually be in a classroom. The weather was fantastic all afternoon,
which made spirit day and the Terry Fox run even more successful. Seeing
this exciting afternoon come together was a great feeling, and we are
ecstatic that it went smoothly and provided a memorable afternoon for
the students.
University Planning
Putting Forth the Best
University Application
Bayview Glen provides numerous
opportunities for students to develop
the most comprehensive application
portfolio possible. Students must realize
that grades earned each year can be
used for admissions purposes. American
universities will base admission decisions
upon the marks the student has achieved
since Grade 9, while universities in the
U.K. focus on Grade 11 marks. More
Canadian universitions are also issuing
early conditional offers of admission
based on Grade 11 marks. Therefore, it
is imperative that students achieve the
best marks possible in all grades, not only
to ensure successful entry to university,
but also to develop the academic skills
necessary for their post-secondary careers.
Some Canadian universities request
that applicants also submit a personal
profile form that illustrates their cocurricular
activities, community service,
and leadership abilities. Most importantly,
all universities want to see that such
involvement had begun in advance of
the Grade 12 year. Universities want
the personal profile forms to illustrate a
sense of commitment by the applicant. In
addition, most American universities will
request SAT or ACT scores, admissions
essays and reference letters.
Students are advised to build and
maintain sound relationships with their
teachers and coaches (their ‘allies’) in
order to obtain insightful and accurate
reference letters. Such letters should
contain information about the student’s
academic strengths, personal character
and suitability for admission. If required,
students should request a reference letter
well in advance of the application deadline
to allow the referee to craft a letter that is
truly reflective.
On Wednesday, October 7, Bayview Glen
hosted the inaugural Explore Fair.
For more information, please contact Troy Hammond,
Director of University Counselling, at 416.386.6643 or
The University Planning Process
Since the start of the school year, all Grade 11 and 12 students have had the opportunity
to learn about future educational opportunities at both the Canadian Universities Fair
and the Explore Fair, which were held at Bayview Glen as well as several in-school
university presentations. Representatives of more than 70 universities from across
Canada and abroad have been available to answer students’ questions this fall.
Students must plan accordingly to attend presentations of interest. Excursions, academic
commitments and holidays may conflict with one of the presentation dates. However, with
advanced planning, a student will be able to acquire the needed information. Grade 12
students are required to attend a minimum of five in-school presentations, while Grade
11 students are required to attend a minimum of three presentations. Students in other
grades, and parents, are invited to attend any presentations of interest.
The University Application Process
Ontario
Universities
Canadian
Universities
American
Universities
Grade 12 students will begin applying to Ontario universities in mid-November.
Students will use an online application for all Ontario Universities (www.ouac.
on.ca). The deadline to apply for Bayview Glen students is December 4, 2015.
Grade 12 students may begin applying now. Application forms can be obtained
directly from the universities’ websites. Some Atlantic universities will offer early
admission if applications are completed by mid November. All applications should
be completed by January 31, 2016.
Grade 12 students should have begun this process. The deadline to submit
completed applications for regular admission is January 1, 2016 (this is during
the school holidays; therefore, students must submit their documentation to
Mr. Hammond for review by December 1, 2015). Students applying under the
‘Early Decision’ plan would have done so by November 1. Grade 11 students
should begin registering for SAT and/or ACT testing.
International Grade 12 students should begin this process immediately, realizing that different
Universities countries begin their school year at times that vary from the academic calendar
in Canada. Applications to the U.K. must be completed by January 15, 2016.
Note: the deadlines for the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, plus all
medical schools in the U.K. have passed.
The Importance of a Campus Visit
Students and parents are encouraged to visit a variety of university campuses this fall.
Many alumni have commented that such visits were essential to their decision-making
process about where to eventually study. Many universities host open houses and tour
days in the fall and during March Break. Announcements for such events can be found on
www.electronicinfo.ca (see ‘Campus Visit and Events’) or on the bulletin boards in the
University Counselling Centre.
What made this fair unique was the range
of exhibitors and the integration of specific
educational sessions. Students and their
parents had the opportunity to interact with
representatives of international universities
– including those from Australia, England,
Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, the United
States – along with Gap year organizations,
specialized health sciences institutions and
Toronto-area colleges that offer applied
degrees. Students were given the opportunity
to attend sessions on high performance
sport, direct-entry medical programmes in the
UK and multiple mini interviews for medical
school. Responses from students, parents and
exhibitors alike were overwhelmingly positive
and bode well for future iterations of the
Explore Fair. Thank you to those who attended.
Homecoming 2015 Welcome Back Alumni
Homecoming is a well-known tradition at
our school that welcomes alumni back
to Bayview Glen on the Friday evening of
Thanksgiving Weekend every year. On Friday,
October 9, over 100 alumni and teachers
attended Homecoming in the Daunt Dining Hall.
Over a beverage and some hors d’oeuvres, our
guests caught up on each other’s news and
shared stories of university life, new jobs, travel
plans, engagements and wedding ceremonies.
There was a strong turnout from Class of 2015
– our most recent graduates returned to school
with excitement for their first Homecoming, as
alumni shared interesting stories of university
and residence life. Husain Tapia ’15, for example,
came to Bayview Glen directly from his university
residence with his luggage in hand to catch up
with his friends and teachers. It was also great
to see Michael Whelan, who had retired from
Bayview Glen last year.
While it was wonderful to see familiar faces,
such as Jocelyn Lau ’05 and Victoria White ’14, it
was also exciting to meet alumni who had moved
back to Toronto recently. Alexi Paradis ’07 moved
from New Brunswick to Toronto over the summer
and attended Homecoming to catch up with her old
teachers, such as her Mentor, Mr Norm Reynolds.
Homecoming is one of our signature events
for recent alumni. Our most recent graduates
have the opportunity to pick up their yearbooks.
Many thanks to all who attended and we look
forward to seeing you again next year.
First Alumni Regional Gathering in Halifax
On Thursday, October 15, Shelly Cha, Director of Alumni Relations, and Nneka MacGregor, Past Board
Chair, met alumni in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was the first Bayview Glen alumni regional gathering in
the Maritime Provinces. It was great to reconnect with Ari Najarian ’02, President and Co-Founder of
Torusoft, an IT company that develops mobile apps, software and database applications for business,
government, defence and not-for-profit clients. Emily Gayda ’13 and Leanne Przybylowski ’14, who
are students at Dalhousie University, spoke about their university life and believe that Bayview Glen
provided the foundation for their success at university. It was a pleasure meeting alumni in Halifax,
and it was clear that no matter where our alumni go after graduation, they can still find a piece of
home at one of our regional gatherings.
Career Breakfast: Tiffany McKenzie ‘04
Tiffany McKenzie ’04 returned to Bayview Glen on Tuesday,
October 20 to speak at our first Career Breakfast of the year. She
has an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in History and American
Studies from the University of Toronto and a law degree from the
University of Buckingham Law School in United Kingdom. She
is currently completing her Master of Law degree at the State
University of New York on scholarship, while working within the
Legal Practice team at Deloitte. She spoke about careers in law
and shared interesting, insightful stories as a lawyer.
We plan to bring more alumni back to school who can share expertise
in their industries and serve as career mentors to students.
The BVG Players are
excited to be planning our
2016 production of
etamorphoses
by Mary Zimmerman
Zimmerman’s play is based on the poem
by the Roman poet Ovid. From King
Midas to Narcissus, this play consists
of several vignettes about Greek myths.
“Metamorphoses” will remind viewers that
many of the stories we know today are
heavily influenced by these interesting
myths. If you’ve ever wondered where
the word “narcissist” came from or an
explanation for many well-known sayingsyou’ll
find them in our 2016 production
of “Metamorphoses”. The play has been
auditioned and rehearsals are starting, as
we also make decisions about costumes,
sets, and other
aspects behind
the scenes. We
are so excited to
be putting this
play together!
Please stay
tuned for further
information….
Connecting
with the
outdoors
We experienced many different
challenges on the grade 9
Haliburton trip that left different
types of marks on us…mentally and
physically. Whether it was watching the
sunset after a long of day of activities,
or the productive arguments from
canoeing – this trip had the ability
to bring us all together. One of the
highlights was tree climbing; as soon as
we arrived we took one look at that tree
and said “Nope, it’s not happening.” I
guess it wasn’t only the fear of heights
or falling, but the fear of failing, of
getting six feet up that tree, not being
able to go on and everybody watching.
We realized though, that in order to
move forward, you can’t look too far
behind you, you can’t look too far ahead
of you, because that’s when you become
scared, that’s when you give up. But
if you look straight ahead, if you stay
in the moment and focus on “ok what I
have to do now”, I guarantee you, you
will get to the top of that tree. Another
memory was getting to meet the
huskies. There were baby huskies and
fully grown huskies. It was really fun.
Also, the group had a lot of fun walking
70 feet in the air on the canopy tour.
The canopy tour was fun and scary at
the same time, because you were 70 feet
up in the sky which was the scary part,
but it was a new experience which made
it fun. There were multiple challenges
for the group during the trip, and these
taught us a lot. Overall we would just
like to thank all the teachers and our
entire group for making our camping
trip such a memorable experience and
we all look forward to our future trips
ahead at Haliburton forest.
Student Leader Profiles
Hello, I’m Sophia Glory Slovenski and I am honoured to be the head of Laurier again
this year. I have been a student at Bayview Glen for 11 years and have never missed a
sports season. I’ve participated in, and watched many exciting sports championships.
Seeing the whole school come out and support games is when I truly realize how
Sophia much school spirit we have. My goal as a part of the Athletic Council is to create even
more school spirit. I plan to do this by making a tally board of all the house points and putting it in a
place where everyone can see it. I also plan to hang up each of the house flags along the wall in the
Daunt Dining Hall so that the student body can enjoy their house colours while eating and socializing. I
am happiest when I know that others are happy, so when our Bayview Glen community comes together
for sporting events, house leagues, spirit days and much more I remember how fortunate I am to be a
Bayview Glen student and Gryphon. I am thrilled to be a part of the action in setting up this year’s Spirit
Day, Winter Fest and more. I am looking forward to an exciting year! Go Gryphons!
Hi, my name is Malcolm Straker. This is my 15th and final year at Bayview Glen.
Bayview Glen has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it is safe to
say my teachers and peers have helped form me into the person I am today. I’ve been
on countless sports teams throughout my time here including ultimate frisbee and
badminton. I am also currently a member of the Advanced Citizens Club and Chess
Club, and I hope to explore many other activities to make my Grade 12 experience as
memorable as possible. This year, as the Head of Macdonald, I plan to give back to the community that
has done so much for me during my time here. I plan to get more students involved in the Bayview Glen
community via house and sport-related activities, and along with the other SEC members, make this
the most successful year yet!
Hi, I'm Shiv Yucel and I am a Grade 12 student, enjoying my 7th year at Bayview Glen. I
have been a part of countless Bayview Glen athletic teams such as soccer, basketball,
softball, ultimate frisbee and cross country. As Head of Athletics it is my goal to get
the student body interested in, and excited about sports going on within the school.
The Athletic Council has a lot of potential and we hope to enjoy a successful year full
of participation and spirit.
My name is Erin Alizadeh and I am in Grade 12. This is only my second year here at
Bayview Glen. I have been a part of the field hockey, swimming, and softball teams
during my time at Bayview Glen. Outside of school I am a competitive synchronized
swimmer. This year I hope to get more people involved in school athletics and make
sure everyone has a great year.
Hello, my name is Jessica Wickett. Although this is only my fourth year at Bayview
Glen, I feel at home in the community as someone who has been here their whole life.
I quickly became involved in sports when I came here in grade nine. In the past years
I have been a part of the volleyball, cross-country, track, and ultimate frisbee teams.
This year I hope as part of the Athletic Council, we persuade students to become
more active and involved in sports.
Hi my name is Samantha Allison and I am currently in Grade 12, and have been at
Bayview Glen since Grade 10. I have been on three sports teams every year since being
here. As part of the Student Executive Council, I want to get the entire student body
excited about sports. I think we have an amazing athletic programme, with amazing
coaches and students. I look forward to giving Bayview Glen the best year I can!
Collaboration: The
most important 21st
century competency?
Last month I explored the fact that
education systems around the
world are in the midst of an exciting
turning point. As part of this change, all
schools will be responsible for fostering
21st century competencies that will allow
children to succeed in the future. These
21st century competencies include the
ability to think creatively, to collaborate,
to communicate through a wide variety of
mediums, to think critically and problem
solve, and to be thoughtful and reflective
global citizens.
This month I’ve chosen to focus on
collaboration since many experts and
researchers believe this may actually
be the most important 21st century
competency. Why is that? After all, people
have always worked together to solve
problems, right? So what has changed?
Collaboration in a 21st century context
is more than just the ability to work in
teams. It involves the ability to learn from
and contribute to the learning of others.
It involves the use of social networking
skills. It involves the ability to demonstrate
empathy in working with others, from both
similar and diverse backgrounds. And it
also requires people to develop collective
intelligence, to co-construct meaning, and
to become creators of content, rather
than just consumers of content.
Clearly, this is a sophisticated
competency that will need to be fostered
deliberately. In other words, this is a
competency that needs to be taught
explicitly.
At Bayview Glen collaboration is
nurtured amongst our youngest preschool
students when teachers give young
children the language to take turns, wait
patiently, and listen to one another. As
children proceed through our primary
grades and beyond, collaboration
is promoted through group tasks
and problem solving, team building,
participation in sports, and in assemblies
organized around themes like respect
and responsibility.
As Bayview Glen students grow, so
does their collaborative competency.
Our students use technology to solve
problems and collaborate with one
another and they become able to
create new knowledge and content and
contribute to the collective knowledge
base of their peers.
As parents, when we reflect on our own
workspaces and lives we can likely identify
numerous areas where collaborative
competency enabled problem solving and
growth, and where poor collaboration
disrupted or hindered solutions from
emerging. Is it any wonder, therefore,
that many people identify the ability to
collaborate successfully as a key 21st
century competency?
Beware the
praise junkie
remember thinking the painting was good – really
I good. When my daughter proudly showed me her latest
masterpiece, it occurred to me she was developing some
real talent. My automatic reaction was to shower her with
praise. I wanted to gush about how excellent the piece
was but I caught myself just before I opened my mouth.
It's believed students are now expecting and waiting for a
gold star of approval on many things they do, and positive
feedback from parents has morphed into lavish attention.
Many experts blame the self-esteem movement. In our
attempt to counteract the harshness and negativity that can
sometimes dominate a child’s world, we’ve swung the other
way and have ramped up the positive encouragement to the
point our children can sometimes believe everything they do
is awesome. It leads to what some parenting gurus believe is
a generation of praise junkies. It is also believed children lose
a handle on what is authentic reinforcement and what is just
more of the same thumbs up reaction they're conditioned
to receive. With my daughter’s painting, I've been told it's
more important to emphasize the effort or progress she
has made. “You look like you’ve worked really hard or you’re
using so many more colours” is better than “That is amazing.
You should get an A plus on that!” But there’s an even more
comprehensive approach. You can aim for this mantra: Don’t
tell them they’re great; set them up for greatness. There are
four steps that accompany this way of thinking.
1. Culture of optimism – encouraging students to try
new things even if it the outcome is unsuccessful means
children learn that achieving excellence isn’t everything.
Effort and risk taking are valuable skills.
2. Autonomy – let them own their work and success.
3. Celebrate small wins – it’s not all about the end
result. A 90% on a huge project is wonderful but it’s also
about the hard work you witness along the way.
4. Remove fear – how can a child feel fearful if he or she
is always getting praise? The fear comes from wondering
what happens when something isn’t excellent. First time
failures can be crushing if they’ve always been told they
are the best.
Confession time. I still tell my daughter every now and then
her work is sensational without probing her feelings or
praising the effort. The trick is it has to be authentic. Other
times, I can see it in her face when she’s looking for more of
a reaction. I’m hoping she’s learning to appreciate a varied
response and not always expect gushing praise. Of course,
ideally, they’re proud of their own work but let’s face it, we all
like a gold star every now and then.
L5A Teacher
I am beyond excited to call Bayview
Glen home now in my capacities as
L5A’s class teacher. Grade 5 is not
only an incredibly special year for
students but also for teachers. It is a
transitional year and I feel absolutely
fortunate to support students
throughout this journey. Originally
from a small suburb west of Ottawa,
I always had an itch for adventure,
culture and travel. After completing
my BA at Western and BEd at UOIT,
I moved to Istanbul, Turkey where I
taught, lived and completely immersed
myself for 6 years. After teaching at
an IB International school, marrying
my Turkish prince and mastering
a new language, my husband and
I migrated to Canada in June of
2014. One of my deepest passions is
collaboration and getting involved.
This year I am fortunate to be a
member of Cohort 21, a CIS Ontario
professional development community
focussing on 21st Century education. I
will also be joining the Round Square
team as we head to Ecuador during
the March Break. In my spare time
I enjoy running, hiking, yoga, biking
and of course eating! Thank you so
much to the Bayview Glen community
for opening your arms and welcoming
me to the family.
P8D Teacher | French |
Spanish
Hello. Bonjour! ¡Hola! After 15 years
teaching French and Spanish at
the Upper School, I have now the
privilege to instill an appreciation
for languages in students at the Prep
division.
Originally from Italy, I immigrated
to this beautiful country at age 19,
inspired by the multicultural city of
Toronto and by the desire to enhance
my language skills in English
and French in bilingual Canada.
I graduated from the University
of Toronto, while completing an
exchange at l’ Université Laval and a
teaching internship in France.
I have two daughters who attend
Bayview Glen: Sofia in Grade 3 and
Clara in BG3. On the weekends, I
enjoy exploring the green spaces of
the suburbs, cooking delicious Sunday
meals with my husband, and keeping
busy with my girls. In the summer,
I travel to Italy to spend time with
family and friends, and discover other
parts of Europe.
Sciences | Technological Ed. Teacher
I am delighted to be part of the Upper School team as I
rejoin the school after my second maternity leave. This
year, I am teaching Biology (Grade 11), Science (Grade 10
and Technology (Grade 9). I came to Bayview Glen in 2007,
when I took up a position teaching Science and Math at
the Prep School. I taught Grade 7 for several years and
became entrenched in the vibrant and dynamic community
that is Bayview Glen. While I have thoroughly enjoyed all
my years teaching at the Prep, teaching Upper School has
always been a dream of mine. I have a specialized degree
in Biology and teaching certificate in Grade 7-12 education.
Naturally, I am thrilled to combine my skills and interests,
but having the chance to teach the same students that I
taught five years ago is truly the icing on the cake! Students
and teachers have all been supportive and welcoming, and
have helped ease my transition from Prep to Upper School.
Also, for the very first time in all my years at the school,
my son, Rishi (3) and daughter, Romi (16 months) are with
me. Rishi is attending BG3 in the Lower School building,
and Romi is going to daycare at what used to be the old
preschool, so they are literally a hop, skip and a jump away.
In addition to teaching, I will be coaching U14 Badminton
in the Winter, accompanying the Grade 10s on their trip
to Haliburton, and helping with a number of clubs and
committees.
