Pole vaulter Minna Nikkanen, 25, set a new Finnish record last night with a jump of 4.50 metres at the Vattenfall Seuracup competition in Somero, Finland.

Nikkanen scored the new record on her third attempt, beating out her previous record of 4.46 metres.

The current world record for women's outdoor pole vaulting is held by Russia's Yelena Isinbaeva at 5.06 metres.

Nikkanen's new record would qualify her for the World Athletic Championships later this month in Moscow, however, the Finnish team has already been chosen.
