Some People Are Pointing Out A Phallic Reference In The New Ant-Man And The Wasp Photo

Most superhero costumes take an eternity to come together in the design process. Often, the live-action costumes look exactly like they do on the pages of the comic books (see Wonder Woman or Captain America as recent, fantastic examples). Other times, there are changes... and in those changes, there can be unfortunate gaffs. Take, for instance, the recent picture of The Wasp, Evangeline Lilly's scrappy hero who'll appear prominently in this summer's Ant-Man and The Wasp. Some fans looked at it and saw a penis. I kid you not.

Yeah, I can't unsee that now. Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) received a Wasp costume from her father, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) at the end of Peyton Reed's 2015 origin story, Ant-Man. She's not wearing the suit that belonged to her mother Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), but instead has this darker and more sleek suit that'll spring into action when the movie drops in July.

But yeah, the way that the armor in the suit follows the pattern on her body, it looks like a penis. And the memes flowed on social media:

Others expressed disappointment that the design wasn't caught sooner:

What happens next? This isn't a situation where something can be corrected in post-production, like Superman's mustache being CGI'd (poorly) from the face of Henry Cavill so that Justice League can make it into theaters in time. This is The Wasp's costume -- from all that we know -- and she'll be wearing it during the adventure with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) when the Marvel movie reaches theaters. Do you think it's a damaging mistake? Or is social media overreacting to a visual mirage that never was supposed to show up in the first place?

The good news is that Marvel superheroes get redesigns with each new film, so if there's a third Ant-Man movie, The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) likely will have a brand new look. Iron Man gets new Armor every time he shows up on screen in an MCU movie. And even though Peter Parker (Tom Holland) turned down the Iron Spider suit at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, we see him wearing it in the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War.

Spider-Man in Infinity War

Ant-Man and The Wasp arrives in theaters on July 6, and holds the distinction of being the first Marvel movie to arrive after Thanos lays the smack down in Avengers: Infinity War. Will there be anything left to pick up from the rubble? How will Scott and Hope recover from the devastation? We'll find out.
