Sunderland are the subject of Netflix eight-part documentary series that is released in December 2019.

Following the club’s disastrous 2017-18 campaign in the Championship, the documentary is access-all-areas and will re-tell the story of the relegation to League One.

With exclusive access and never before seen footage from behind the scenes, the series promises to offer a unique insight into life at the club during such a dark period.

A press release from Fulwell73 said of the documentary: “In the era of multi-million dollar sponsorship deals and transfers, where the stakes have never been higher or the rivalries more fierce, this brand new Netflix original series sets at its heart the unfailing passion of this UK Northern town for its beloved football club.

“The series will take its audience through the highs and lows of SAFC’s first season in the Championship following its painful relegation the previous year. The production company is Fulwell 73. (I am Bolt, The Class of ‘92) The executive producers are Leo Pearlman and Ben Turner.”

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming documentary series.

What will it be called?

The eight-part series has been titled Sunderland Till I Die.

When and where can I watch it?

The series will stream exclusively on Netflix and will be live there from midnight on Friday, December 14. All eight episodes will be available upon release.

Who has produced the series?

It has been made by production company Fulwell73, who as you might guess by the name are Sunderland supporters. You might remember they were linked with a takeover at the football club in the summer of 2017 as they were starting to film this.

Fulwell73 have been behind some big projects in the past including Usain Bolt film I am Bolt, The Class of ‘92 and the One Direction movie.

What they said

Executive producer Pearlman said: “Sunderland Till I Die is a deeply personal series for us at Fulwell – we named our company after the club, it’s where our family is from, and we are still and will always be passionate fans of Sunderland Football Club.

“It was always a dream to follow our club through the highs and lows of a season and although this past year didn’t give us the success we all craved, we do believe through this story we’ve been able to show the unique relationship every fan has with the club they love and follow, no matter what the circumstances.

“This series captures the drama and heartbreak that the club experienced last season, told through the eyes of the management, players and most importantly Sunderland’s incredible fans.

“We hope audiences all across the globe will recognise something in this universal tale of strength in the face of adversity and fall in love with the characters as we have.”

Is it worth watching?

We can understand why after witnessing such a torrid season at the time, a Sunderland fan might have reservations about the documentary and putting themselves through it again.

Well Netflix gave ChronicleLive early access to the documentary and we can assure you it’s well worth the watch.

It’s far more than just following the club’s bad results on the pitch. As well as access-all-areas at the club offering unique insight, the documentary also looks deep into the connection between the club and its fans and shines a light on the passion and dedication of supporters.

Will there be a second series?

The cameras have kept rolling this season as Sunderland begun life under new ownership and in League One. No second series is yet officially confirmed though, with Netflix waiting to see how the first series is received.
