The latest installment of the ongoing HDR gaming on TVs saga brings good news for owners of LG TVs in Europe.

A number of European LG TV owners have contacted me to say that the firmware update released in the US a couple of weeks ago which introduced a dedicated HDR Game mode is now available on OLED and LCD TVs in their territory too.

As with the US release, this new Game mode reduces the input lag (the time it takes for the TV to render image data received at its inputs) LG TVs suffer with while playing HDR content to between around 30ms and 60ms, depending on which LG TV you have.

As was the case in the US, it seems owners of LG TVs covered by the update need to apply the update manually, via USB. To find the update you need to visit the LG website for your country, scroll to the bottom of the home page and choose ‘software and firmware’ from the Support link list. Then enter the model number of your TV, and track down the download link for the latest firmware. For the UK and France it appears as either firmware number 04.30.90 or 4.30.70 depending on your model, though I guess it’s possible the numbering could be different in other countries.

If you click on the Reference tab below the firmware update links, you should see confirmation that the firmware you’re about to download introduces the HDR Game mode.

Once you’re satisfied you’ve located the correct firmware, download and extract the zip file to your computer, copy it to a clean USB stick, pop the USB stick into your LG TV, and you should be the proud owner of a shiny new HDR Game mode in a matter of minutes.

One bit of bad news is that the update still doesn’t cover LG’s B6 OLED TVs (reviewed here). The guys at HDTVTest have received good information to suggest that a B6 HDR gaming fix is coming at some point, but it’s clearly not ready yet. There’s also currently no sign of the popular UH770V LCD series on the firmware update list, and looking through the past firmware update history for that range it seems it may share some architecture with the B6 OLEDs.

Plenty of other 2016 models ARE affected by the new update, though, so check out the list below to see if your HDR-capable LG TV is one of them.
