BMW’s new X5 SUV has a camera that alerts you when your eyes wander off the road
The infrared device has facial recognition abilities to minimise any risk when using BMW's semi-driverless mode
BMW's new X5 SUV will be able to track your every move while you're driving, as it includes a new facial recognition camera.
The infrared camera is an optional safety device that will ensure you keep your eyes on the road, particularly in driverless mode.
Released later this year, the X5 will use Level 2 autonomy - meaning it needs a person present to make simple automatic driving changes.
It will be apart of BMW's Driving Assistant Professional optional package, which can keep your car in lane and adjusts speeds according to the distance between the car in front of you, as well as other autonomous features.
While, in theory, you don't need to touch the pedals in driverless mode, you will still need to pay attention to the road ahead to minimise any risks.
A warning sign and noise will occur if eyes are taken off the road or closed for a certain amount of time or if you let go of the steering wheel.
If the driver doesn't react, the car will automatically bring the car to a complete stop or slow the car down using the Emergency Stop Assistant system.
It can also carefully manoeuvre the car to another lane or hard shoulder if necessary.
The detection system is similar to Tesla models, where steering wheel sensors will alert you if you've taken your hands off while using Autopilot.
Cadillac has also included a driver 'dash-cam' with its Super Cruise hands-free feature, which also works alongside adaptive cruise control and lane assist.

The intelligent cockpit will also be rolled out to BMW's new generations of the 3 Series, 8 Series and Z4.
Meanwhile, the X5 will cost from around £57,000 for the entry model and from over £70,000 on-the-road for the M sport model.
