Madeira Christmas Lights 2019

Christmas is coming, and it’s a magical time in all of Madeira and Porto Santo, as the streets are bathed in lights and the island glows with bold displays and subtler white illuminations. This year, to prevent any delays, the Christmas light preparations started in October, and Funchal is building up to its annual fantasia of colour and lights.

Funchal, with its striking, magical and imaginative streetlights, trumpeting angels and multicoloured trees captures the imagination and turns the city into an illuminated wonderland, including Porto Santo and other towns and villages around the island. Since 2015, Madeiran lighting company, LuxStar has been responsible for not only creating an environmentally friendly way of lighting the capital and the rest of the island through the use of LED lights, they are also responsible for the creative and innovative use of designs, lights and images that create such a breath-taking kaleidoscope of colour throughout the parks, streets and surrounding buildings. While areas such as the harbour, Pico do Buxo and São Gonçalo will be adorned with decorative ‘Happy Christmas’ signs.

This year, the lights will be officially switched on, on the 1st of December, and with the sound of Christmas music and smell of roasting chestnuts, everyone has the excuse of getting into the festive spirit.
