There are so many reasons to spend end of the year in Madeira. The list is almost too long. But let's mention a few.

  • As of 01 December, the entire island is in the Christmas mood - from decoration, to festivals, Christmas market, etc. It just feels like a fairy tale.
  • Tired of being cold in December? The average temperature in Madeira, during December, is between 20 and 25 C. Yes, it's a short sleeves Christmas!
  • Oh, swim in the ocean on 01 January anyone? Yes, its a thing. And considering that water temperature is 20-21 C, it is so enjoyable!
  • The largest and the most impressive firework in the world take place on New Year's eve. You may have seen your share of fireworks, but trust us this one is different. If you're lucky, you can see from a boat in the open seas
  • Madeira wine. Oh, Madeira wine. So good it might be the only reason you should come to Madeira. Don't miss an opportunity to do some tastings at D'Oliveiras or Barbeito, for example.
  • And did we say the festivities are taking place during full 6 weeks??? From 01 December 2023 till 08 January 2024

Here are only some of the events between 01 December 2023 till 08 January 2024:

Light and Sound Shows

In the city's main streets, dazzling shows of Christmas colors and lights take over, bringing us all to the fairy tale mood already as of 01 December.

Christmas Market - Central Walkway of Avenida Arriaga

Made up of several small houses with Christmas decorations, at the Christmas Market you can find the most diverse regional products such as regional gastronomy characteristic of the Christmas season - don't miss out on bolo do caco, the famous sweet potato bread with garlicy butter.... Fancy a glass of Madeira wine? Some exotic fruits and plants. All are there.

Various performances - Central Walkway of Avenida Arriaga

From the 1st of December 2023 to the 8th of January 2024, downtown Funchal is filled with light, color and melody. During this period, along the Central Walkway of Avenida Arriaga there are daily performances by various groups which animate this location with philharmonic bands, folklore groups and concerts.

New Year's Eve Fireworks Show - Funchal | Porto Santo - 31 December (midnight)

The fireworks show for the New Year lasts about eight minutes and is distributed across 59 fireworks stations located across Funchal’s amphitheater (27 stations), Pier 8 and Praia Almirante Reis (25 stations), at sea (5 stations) and Porto Santo Island (2 stations).

This grand show, with pyrotechnic effects which combines the most modern designs, will present effects not yet seen on New Year's Eve in the Region. In 2006, this event was internationally recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as “The greatest fireworks show in the world”.

"Cantar os Reis" (Singing of the Kings) - Municipal Garden - 5 January

After the New Year's Eve festivities, the celebrations continue until mid-January. During this period, masses in praise of Baby Jesus are celebrated and, in many homes, the nativity scene is still mounted. You thought we were exaggerating about nativity scenes and Madeirans?

The Arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated on the 6th of December with the famous Bolo-Rei which has a broad bean and a small gift inside. Tradition says that, whoever finds the slice containing the broad bean will have to buy the cake the following year and whoever gets the gift will have to buy the drinks.

In the auditorium of the Municipal Garden, on the 5th of January, the “Kings” are sung in a concert open to the public thus reviving this Madeiran tradition.

And see you in Madeira this Christmas and New Year!
